Other then the Syphon input I heard the new Modul8 will have 20 layers and 256 spots in the media bank. It will implement the latest Python and offer OSC like never before seen. To top it all off if you buy the Thunderbolt or USB attachment it will give you a handy under the table.

I can't truthfully answer the RAM vs SSD question but my setup is just like lotech's and I love it. I still use RAM up to my limit then my HDD after that. I am waiting out the SSD prices for the optical bay and weighing my thunderbolt options. I have done several shows with 10 layers of 720p content...
I have been working on a new show rig and I had the idea to run my powerbook g4 and 3 cameras through my V-4 out to a DV convertor and into my MacBook Pro as a layer in Modul8.
