in MM 5.1 it was still possible to use laser materials and generator as external force for the particles. Why is this not possible anymore?

Hi there, is there a way to find out the loop cycles of material? I am using Caustics for example and need to be able to tell when the animation starts a new round since I need to record the output and create a loop.
