Suggestion : support of 3D models...

    by Xixi » Sun Sep 26, 2004 2:15 pm

That's currently THE feature I'm looking for...

Modul8 is a great product, very well done.

But it would be even better for me if it was possible to import directly 3dsmax or Maya models inside...

I don't know whether I'm the only guy looking for such a feature, but I think it would be VERY VERY usefull.

    Cheers

We plan to bring 3D step by step to Modul8. Next versions will have more 3D (procedural), but you won't be able to import 3D models directly. 3D models will come later.

Mixing 3D objects requires many things to be properly defined:

    - Which file formats ? (3DSMax does not run on Mac OS X).
    - Polygon sorting (what about the order of the layers, what about the Z buffer and the transparency, etc.)
    - Camera support
    - Light support
    - True Z support (scale, translate, etc.)
    - Revised user-interface to navigate in a true 3D world
    - ...

So it's not as simple as showing videos... But this is something that we are thinking about and that will be implemented soon or later...

How about implementing it by means of a Freeframe plugin? So you don't have to mess with modul8 that much (and convert it in a program that it is not).
If this means tampering with teh interface, performance and useablity it has now, I ratehr not have it, but if includedas an addon (by Freeframe or otherwise) it could be ok.

Well, Freeframe is not very appriated for integrating 3D unfortunately. Yes, you can do 3D offscreen, but you cannot really output a 3D model that would be mixed with our OpenGL context. So it is not a perfect solution at all. Nevertheless, could be a temporary solution...

    Thank you Yves

    This soft is definitely interesting.

My VJ small club is running WindowsXP currently... I would like to dump this piece of crap but I need arguments, your soft could be a big one. And I think with FreeFrame support it will be very very cool.

About 3D, don't dump the idea of supporting 3dsmax too fast, quite a lot of guys are using it... even if not on Macintosh.

Keep up the good work !!
    Merci beaucoup !

Well, we won't dump 3DSMax support at all. I already wrote an importer for .ASE (3DSMax ASCII) so it is definitivly a format easy to support. I already wrote DXF and XSI importers also.

Unfortunately, beside DXF (a pretty limited format without u/v support for textures last time I checked) I don't have any importer at this time for native MacOS X 3D modelers. I think that a Mac application with 3D support should be able to import Maya and Lightwave models (at least). We don't have licences of these applications, so I don't know how difficult it is to import models coming from Maya or LightWave. I'll investigate that when we are starting to integrate true 3D support.

Anyway we have many other things to do right now.

    3D manipulation

    by Bear » Thu Sep 30, 2004 9:41 pm

    Xixi -

I too would like to see 3D support in the long term (but no sooner than the team is ready).

Have you seen Touch? After limited tests my conclusions were: difficult interface, complicated programming tools, extremely (overly) demanding of processing power - but enormously powerful. I think 3D really does create another dimension of complexity, not just for the core processing but also for the interface, as Yves said.

For myself - I'd rather have extensive power to manipulate wireframes than more limited control over more fully textured models. But I'm happy to wait and see. As I say, if you want that control now, look at Touch.

been try to get 3d going

    by holoFX » Mon Oct 04, 2004 10:48 am

happy to see this thread going. i posted a thread wa while back about using a modul8 type extension to crate 3d movies or machinima but nobody replied so i thought there was no interest in 3d. i have been try to get an extension to modul8 or pluggin going that would take zbrush info and mesh deformatiopns via open gl into 3d space as with the open source code that garagecube already has. the problem is i am a 3d animator not a programmer....been asking around for open gl people to help but so far no luck. i really think that it is a matter of getting the mesh deformation and a few parameter in. open source stuff yves has in there demo for oms seem like the way to go. 3d would open up modul8 to a wwhole new consumer base and obj open gl is read by almost all the 3d programs on both platforms.

    cheers

I know this post is OOOOLLLLLDDD but was wondering where you guys got to with the 3d stuff?

    Hi everyone

...why not start from a simple way called "Sketckup" as 3D modeller for M8?
Lot of people are using Max but not all of them.
I think Sketchup could be the best software to start with even for 3D newbies

..let's see what happen in future!

    Bye

    Old post it is indeed.

The current architecture of modul8 that Yves was referring to is pretty much the same one that exists today.

3d objects is something that will happen with v3 in some way/shape/form.

For now it is definitely possible to bring in objects using QC.
