    Modul8 - Whats really happening?

    by lotech » Tue Dec 17, 2013 7:09 am

Seems like a good time to once again ask the question we've all been asking for the last couple of years - what the hell is going on with development with Modul8? Its been 8 months since 2.7 came out along with the 2.8 Alpha - 5 months since the last bug fix via 2.7.1.

How about a blog post about whats happening at Garagecube? Do you have other jobs now? Are you working on iOS apps because thats where the users are? We have no real info on whats going on with our favourite VJ app.

I don't feel as paid up users that we need to be informed of the intricacies of a small software developer but every passing week the forums become quieter and users like myself just stop visiting and we inevitably start looking elsewhere for our performance tools. This totally sucks because we still love using Modul8 so much and just wish there was some sort of long term plan for the app.

Please. Feel free to give us an update!

I'd have to agree. I love Modul8 and I have for a long time. I use it every day on my installation project and I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I don't have any real need for new features, but I would still like to know if Modul8 is going to continue to be a viable option going forward. I probably wouldn't switch tomorrow even if I came to this site one day and it was gone, but I always wonder if there's going to be an OS update that breaks Modul8 for good. It sure would be nice to know that someone is still home at Garagecube (or not)...

The fact they let the 2.8 alpha's time limit lapse without a new version makes it seem all the worse.

    that's what worries me..
been patiently checking the forum every couple days for the past 6 months or so in hopes to find a final 2.8 release, update or any kind of info whatsoever..

pretty sad to report it's been a big waste of my time to say the least :(

edit: upon checking the blog out, there's been an updated alpha2 version uploaded - but see no changelog, or any details about what was changed other than the expiry date.
too bad i never check the blog, and go here for all my 'up 2 date' info lol..

What I think is particularly peculiar is that there actually seems to be development going on at GarageCube but only in the form of MadMapper. Clearly MM is in active development if you follow that site. What I'm not clear on is what the extent of GarageCube's involvement is in that progress. From what I can tell, MM seems to be a joint venture of sorts. What I've been wondering as of late is if perhaps Modul8 and MadMapper will eventually merge into one program. Clearly, mapping is the hot thing right now and it would probably be a better business model to just roll the two programs into one.

I do find it somewhat peculiar that there is essentially radio silence when it comes to GarageCube on these forums. I mean, someone had posted here asking about a discount on licenses over the Christmas season and there was no answer from anyone. However, if you look at the Mad Mapper site, there actually WAS a discount on MM and Modul8. Seems very strange to me that someone wouldn't take the time to just make a quick response to potentially sell their product.

Unfortunately, I have no inside knowledge of GarageCube. But as I type, it seems most likely that Modul8 might continue life as something that is integrated into MM. When one considers that most of the recent (I use that term loosely) enhancements to Modul8 pertain to technologies which facilitate integration (e.g. Syphon), it seems clear that GarageCube recognizes a need for that type of workflow. As I've said before, to this day Modul8 continues to serve me well and I don't actually *need* any new features. However, it is perhaps the very fact that Modul8 continues to work (despite several major OS upgrades) and work fairly well, that leads me back to these forums on a regular basis. It's still a very viable product and I have a very hard time that GarageCube would abandon that...

Yeah I think the main one for me is builtin two way midi support - I want to make an touch OSC template for my iPad but can't get return values - it can be done via udarts module but as its a module can't work across other modules and is limited to the main GUI. It could be fixed with a few hours of coding.
I do agree though I'm happy overall as we can improve it ourselves with modules - except of course those things we can't.

I would agree with MIDI feedback. Personally, it's not something that is at the top of my list right now, but I've definitely wanted it in the past and I think it's a pretty standard feature for just about anything where you might make extensive use of a controller. Alas, we still have no word from GarageCube...
