    how good on g3?

by adam jay » Thu Mar 03, 2005 11:44 am

hi, firstly i'd like to say this app is great. very well done! its a giant step up from Resolume on the windows side...

that said, i'm wondering how much of the procesisng that goes on in modul8 is Altivec and how much is GPU dependent? and how big of a factor is ram?

I've tested it on my 12" PB 1.5ghz (excellent results btw), and my girlfriend (who will be using it during my live sets)'s iBook G4 800. I found that on the iBook (Radeon 9200) at 640x480 i could easily get 8+ layers with no stuttering so that is exceptional. We used the video hack to get it to feed out to a 2nd monitor/projector. But a friend of mine came over today and i showed him Modul8, he fell in love with it but has not much money to buy a Mac to run it.

he wants to know how well it would run on a G3 iBook 700mhz/800mhz with the 32MB Radeon 7500?

i am curious too as these iBooks can be found for very cheap these days.
    :)
    thanks!

I've got an iBook G3@700 and it works just great. Depending on the clips and the encoding, and how many effects you line up in the compoisition, I can mix up to 5 in 320x240 res.

modul8 v2 has dropped performance a wee bit though, as far as I could notice. but I can still mix up 4 of them like a beast.

thanks Akira... are the 3D fx really taxing on the G3?.

i rarely use more than 4 layers simultaneously so that would be perfect, but i'd still like to use some of the new 3D fx

To be perfectly honest, as soon as I've more than 2 or 3 3D effects, I have issues on a 1GHz powerbook. The only answer is to try it!

i found for my friend an iBook G3 700mhz like your akira.
20GB/256MB with combo drive for $550 US. i think this deal is good is good for him, but then again a new iBook G4 (refurbished) 1.2ghz is $849 US at apple.com with 30GB HD.

what would you guys do if you were like my friend?, he has not much money to spend after he buys Modul8. but really loves the program and wants to buy it.

I have to say he should go for the newest machine he can afford. A G4 is a much better choice than a G3. Also, the newer the Mac, the better the video card. But, most importantly, whatever machine he uses, he should get as much RAM as possible.

Sorry to bring bad news, but there it is!

Yes. If possible go for the G4. Altivec makes a big difference on the Mac platform.

Yeah Id go for the cheapest iBook G4 at the very least. Bt add RAM to it, modul8 greatly benefits from extra RAM. I only got 385 in my G3 though. But on 1GB it r0x!
