Perfect portable hard drive for video

    by mannikin » Fri Aug 11, 2006 11:50 pm

Been trying to slim down my live setup. I've been using an other world computing FW 800 drive, but seeing its not very small and "portable", I'm trying to come up with alternatives. I found this the other day:

Would this be sufficient for video? I need something that is as small and portable as this for my live gigs. Our band has been using this drive to play back for Ableton Live sequences. I was not sure if it could handle video as well. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated.

    hey that looks pretty neat!
the bad thing about slim portable disks is that they typically are only 5400 RPM - which means you are not getting more performance (sometimes less) only more space.
But these are 7200 RPM so you should be getting the performance of a "desktop" drive.
    Go for it...

I also found this, which also supports FW800: http://www.wiebetech.com/products/ComboGB.php

I have the older wiebetech that only has firewire 400.
On the plus side it's 7200 rpm/fast enough for video, it's also bus powered which is very convenient at a gig, and if looks are important to you it's brushed alluminium to match your Power Book/MacBook Pro
On the down side it was expensive....£200 for 60GB

Nice. Does come with a case or something? I didn't see any info on any case accessories.

Wanted to give a report on this.

    The combination of this case:

    And this drive:

Has been fantastic!! :D I basicaly have the drive Velcroed to my keyboard stand, and it has been a champ. Used it without a hitch at a couple of shows already. Bus-powered as well, which is a plus. Totally recommend it if anyone is looking for a solid, portable HD solution.
