    by piero101 » Wed Nov 08, 2006 5:33 pm

    Hi!
Is there any possibility to use a videostream (URL) from the internet for videocapturing?

    Thanks,

    ??
Sorry, I didn't understand that. What do you mean, embedded in a .mov-file?

I was wondering, if I can use an URL of a webcam for example to capture a video.

Does that mean, I will definitly need a videofile?

Not really. It is possible to create Quicktime streaming movie files. Basically it is a special kind of movie file which streams their data over the internet. You can open them in the quicktime player for instance. I guess you will need a streaming server on the other side.

And how can I tell Modul8 to use a stream?
All I know about media types, is to drag and drop a .mov-file into the media-library :)

you must be able to play your webcam stream from a quicktime file on your computer (the file only contents the stream address) then if it works in quicktime it should work in modul8... just drag your .mov file in the library. But quicktime streaming is not common for webcams...

Unfortunately, they are not common, but here are three that I know of:

    Swiss Alps
    rtsp://cam.buchs-engineering.com/mpeg4/media.amp

    British marina
    rtsp://qtss.cdl.vg/rys.sdp

    Irish beach
    rtsp://84.203.150.238/mpeg4/media.amp

And yes, they work in M8. Here's what you do(you need Quicktime Pro): copy the rtsp link and open Quicktime. Open new URL (or apple-U) and paste in the link. Once you see an image, save the file (don't try to export but make sure you 'Save as self contained'). Next, drop the resulting movie file into M8 and off you go.

I've been wanting to use live webcams in a performance for a while, but as you'll see, these cams are merely ok, not superb. It's too bad M8 can't take a stream from a windoze media cam (via the Flip4Mac plugin) as I've got tons of nice links to those. One day perhaps...

    Cheers,
    Justin

P.S. When I click on the steam links above directly from Firefox, it tried to launch RealPlayer to handle them... just copy and paste into Qtime.

To my knowledge, there's no simple way... I've done a lot of hunting and pecking to find the ones I have. Speaking of which, here's one more I forgot about, a beach from the states:

    Foley Beach, SC
    rtsp://64.92.164.59/surfcam1.sdp

If you find any different ones, please share.

    Cheers,
    Justin

in the same line of thought, would there be a way to stream one's webcam content internally using the same technique, and import that to modul8. I'm almost there with evocam but the streaming is an html document and I can't get it to open in quicktime, only in a browser.
the streaming idea from a virtual internal "server" would actually maybe be a work around to having two simultaneous video capture sources at once- if it works for online streaming webcams it should work for an internal streaming via another video source, right ?

a little update. I just imported an swf flash webcam object and it works fine ( one just has to set the flash allow preferences fine).this can be combined with video capture to have two video in feeds.

much simpler than the whole server thing.
