    Masking layers

    by Mike » Sat Nov 27, 2004 1:32 pm

I've been trying Modul8 out, and I'm a bit puzzled by the layer masking. I'm looking for a way to overlay clips which are shot against white or black onto other clips. The 'light' and 'dark' modes don't do this - they seem to treat the whole layer as its own opacity mask - allowing partial transparency on the non-white areas. I don't want this - I just want to key off the pure white or black, and not affect the look of the rest of the image.

Does this make sense? Is there any way to do what I want? The lumakey and lumakey inv settings seem to work in the same way as 'light and 'dark' modes.

What I'm trying to say is that the Modul8 settings seem to affect the layer compositing mode - I just want 'normal' replace compositing between the layers, but for a particular layer to generate a transparency mask based on its (anti-aliased) pure white or pure black elements.

The only solution for now is to make a movie with a pre-computed alpha.
