    Suggestions, yet again

    by chromafresh » Thu Dec 30, 2004 5:13 pm

I'm sorry if this is getting tedious... I really should be working on some ideas for a music video, but I admit being a bit addicted to playing with the software. I don't have any real VJ gigs anytime soon, so its just been alot of fiddling mind you, but some more things came up that seemed like quirks that could use some adjusting.

    More suggestions again:

o This is a major one but generally I'd like to see layer "modes" mimic photoshop a little more. That doesn't necessarily mean that I need lots more options (though an additive transfer mode would be nice), just simply that for the current "light" and "dark", layer order and transparency percentage seem to have no effect on the composition. It would be great if they did. If this means sacrificing performance... then forget it :?

Naturally more tranfer modes would be fun, but I find what is in the software circa 1.1 to be sufficient. Projected video rarely allows for subtlety after all.

o This isn't big, and will surely coverable with modularity, however I'd like to see "scratch cue" buttons in addition to the current knobs. This would allow for cueing scratch points with buttons on midi devices.
Regarding modularity, while I can appreciate that this will cover alot of needs, I'm sure many users are concerned that certain core features should be designed into the main UI, and that lower priority functionality should be out of the main UI, or treated as floating windows. While I understand that alot of my requests will be "able to be done" with modules, I guess I'm a little worried that I'm going to have a screen full of little module windows to navigate through to just to work the software. You guys are really doing great so far, and I'm sure you have a handle on how to prioritize these concerns, and keeping the UI lean isn't a problem, but I admit being a little nervous about how this is going to be executed.

o Minor ones, doable with a module, I know... in fact, pardon me if I requested this before... Buttons for:
    RESET ALL TRANSFORMATIONS CURRENT LAYER
    RESET ALL COLORS CURRENT LAYER
    RESET ALL FX CURRENT LAYER

    RESET ALL TRANSFORM/COLORS/FX CURRENT LAYER

o OK I also wanted to just let you know about some performance hangs I was witnessing... I'm sure this is normal but I was trying to switch the media content of a layer and wasn't getting any response with some media... If I had to guess what media allowed replacing and what media wasn't allowed to replace, the rejected media was longer (larger=streamed?). I could go to a new layer set and insert the same media there, or turn off all the layers but for one and finally get it going. Does this sound normal?

o I also had a crash after about 2 hours of play. No "an unexpected error" message... the software just canceled out. I might have had about 4 layers going with two matrixes (just doing a L/R mirror thing)

o This reminds me, but can the matrix distance also be set to minus?
Perhaps this is better to keep out of the main UI and do with a module as it could make the current matrix tool less convenient, but I'm looking to do mirroring like the distort/mirror filter in After Effects. With the current matrix one can do a V: 1 H: 2 Matrix with the distance at zero and X reversed, and get a mirror-like effect on the edges of the layer. But only on the edges... It would be nice to be able be able to set the mirror axis in the center for example.

o I also mentioned this on another thread (Modul8 style) but in post V2 updates, when you guys are rethinking the media window, it would be nice to see some customizability in the media window. Renaming of media sets, reordering of media, not 16 square format necessarily... I know there was mention of a list for media. This could be good... I still prefer to have thumbnails, but for thumbnails, it would be good if the user could select the frame to be the thumbnail, instead of just being the first frame. Some of my clips look very similar on the first frame and this can be kind of confusing.

o Solo switches for layers was another idea. This is so that one could assign media to layers and do a ABCDEFGHIJK switch from layer to layer to layer... I know one could replace media in the currently selected layer and get something similar, but only with the current layers effects/transforms. This is kind of limiting. Also I understand that we will be able to do AB fades and switching with V2, and this is a good too, but you might consider other ways to execute this. I'm being a little greedy here, so feel free to take this suggestion with a grain of salt, but solo playback would allow one to assign different transforms or FX to two layers with the same media and toggle back and forth, or switch quickly to another clip when the music drops out or something or do a ABCD switch from layer to layer to layer, etc...

o This may not have come up yet as a suggestion, and as I'm writing this it starts to sound almost a little more trouble than its worth, but I was thinking before that grouping would be nice (or "linking" as in photoshop layers).
This seemed necessary when I was trying to move a couple layers at the same time and it seemed a little "clunky" in the output.

Another time, thank you for your suggestions!

    - Regarding the crash: You did not get a crash log ? Anything in the console ? Do you remember what you were doing ?

    - About the peformance problem: What codec were you using ?

    - We know that having hundreds of small modules floating on the screen is not the best solution. As you pointed out, having a strong well done default user interface is very important and it is still the direction that we take for Modul8. So no, we won't tell our users to create modules each time they request a new feature. On the other hand, it is better to say "you can do it with a module now" than "just wait for the next release of Modul8, hopefully we'll have the time to implement your feature".

Also, since the V2.0 we start to run out of space in the main interface. So for more advanced options, we will have to create secondary windows as modules soon or later.

There is also the case where a user wants a very different approach to VJing. Like qmint pointed out in the thread "Modul8 style" , some people would like to have an interface that is less like a compositing program but more like an instrument (ala Arkaos). With modules, a user can create one single window that triggers its clips and forget about the layer stack for instance. This is a case where a module instead of generating many windows, regroups many features in one window but with a different approach. (Well I'm starting to be out of topic  )

    suggestions yet again (performance hickups)

    by chromafresh » Mon Jan 03, 2005 5:44 am

    re: performance issues

well, first I should say that I've been testing Modul8 on a 1.2Ghz 17" Powerbook with about 1GB of RAM and theres only about 3GB open on the startup disk. about a half hour before crashing I got a message that my startup disk was almost out of space. as far as I can tell, after the software went through RAM it was surviving on virtual memory, and kept using HD space until there was no more, and then crashed.

Next time I crash I'll take a look at the console and see if I can send you something. That info seems to be gone from the conole logs now and the crash log doesn't seem to have an entry for Modul8.

I've been using a combination of 512X384 Photo JPEG media and 320X240 Photo JPEG media for the most part. media that is being "rejected" when replacing layers or taking a long time before it loads in seems to be the longer, streamed media. The FAQ mentions that 1 or 2 second media preloads, but isn't specific about what the cutoff point is for preloading vs. streaming. Almost all of my media is 4 seconds or more (usually 4 / 8 / 16 / 32 seconds), do it seems like most of it is streaming.

    Cheers,
    -b
