    about external drive

    by Raeps » Mon Jan 21, 2008 12:54 pm

Hello everyone and thank you to the garagecube team for this great product.

I have a question, for the moment i only use my internal drive for all my footage and i choose preload to ram for all my clip.
I have a macbook pro with 4 Go of ram so i could preload a lot of clip.

My question is, if i buy a fast external drive (with firewire 800) shall i have the possibility to put footage with "direct to disk" settings.
Does my footage will have a loading time before playing back, or does they play immediatly with a fast drive ?
I use some big clips (about 50Mo), so maybe i will produce some delay for them to use external drive.

I used to work with resolume on Pc with an external drive and it works fine, but i don't know for m8.

Another question, if i buy a new drive and i want to move projects and VJ footage to this new drive, is there a possibility to change all the links of footage contain in one project (previously created on my internal drive) to my new hard drive without changing clip by clip.
In fact, if i moove all my footage, all my project are dead ?

    Thank you for further answer.

I have a similar spec laptop, with 4GB of Ram i find having 64MB clips are no problem loaded in Ram. Everything really big i run off hard disk(100Mb) and they start pretty quick (firewire 800, 7200 drive 16MB cache)

ahhhh....re-linking or "collect for output" option would be great.
eg. I get a set together on one computer with clips from various drives, then I use the "collect project" option , it creates a new folder with and M8 project file with all the video clips copied into new folder and relinked to new project, but with relative path names such as ../projectnamefolder so it can be portable between computers
Or something like that........get the gist?

    In the short term :
I have managed to get round this by having a synced folder from my laptop to an external drive. When i want to use the version on external drive I open the M8 project on external drive in smultron(very good text based editor). I do a find and replace for the path ie. on my local machine my clips are in /VJ and my external drive /Volumes/L279/VJ so i do i find and replace for /VJ and replace with /Volumes/L279/VJ. Works ok.
