So we are at v.10.5.2. Is it time to upgrade. What are the gains, what are the losses with using M8 with Leo.

they say it faster, I don't see any problems vs tiger

I haven't faced any problems...
I played with it a lot, but not with a full screen output, and no gigs.

So there is my report so far.
M8 seems to be faster and works well with Matrox DualHead2Go DVI. I shall do a gig next week, but it has run 2/3 hours in the studio without a problem.
I find quicklook good addition when looking in folders. But i use iview Media pro to find and load clips in real.
Quartz Composer is really good, but integration with M8 is still limited. But maybe this is not something I need, because all QC stuff takes a lot of CPU and my MBP runs on the edge with M8 in anyway. I use some interactive setups and QC lets me to integrate some motion with video. But so far i have been able to use live camera feed to mimic these effects and with very little overhead.
And I enjoy the very clean look of Leo. Obviously my dock is on the side.
I seem to be happy with my upgrade specially since some of my MBP problems went with Tiger.

Any of you who do use quartz compositions in your visuals who haven't yet upgraded should be aware of a major change in the system.

All quartz compositions exported through the quicktime player (or simply opened as is in modul8) are forced to run in a new "safe mode" which basically disables a whole lot of important patches that can pose a security risk on the system.

Among them, Audio Input is disabled. MIDI input is disabled. ALL 3rd party plugins are disabled. There is no "disabling" safe mode either.

I've been following discussion on the QC mailing list and apparently the only way to get these functions (I'm aware of) back is to "wrap" these patches in a plugin and then use a hack to make 3rd party plugins pass the safe mode. This of course opens up your system to major security vulnerabilities.

In short, upgrading has totally f.... me. I used audio input and midi in quartz comps a lot. The only reason I upgraded to Leopard in the first place was to be able to take advantage of the new version of QC, and now I find it's basically useless. There is no mention of this new safe mode in the Quartz release docs, I guess I should have researched more.

Excluding Quartz, everything still runs fine and dandy, the only other exception being that a few of my favorite Pete's Freeframe Plugins don't work anymore. But only four or five of them.

A long time I have been wishing that there would be OSX just for advanced users (not advanced developers) without all bells and securety walls. OSX that is not connected to internet all the time and where person can take responsibility himherself, not by S official developers. Where I can disable stuff myself.

I have installed a plugin that solves the problem with 'audio in' quartz-modul8, I don't know if it really 'opens up your system to major security vulnerabilities' but it works...

Keep an eye on these guys for the 3d loader plugins in development, they are the bomb.
