new mac books pro - harddisk

    by LUMA » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:58 am

    hello modul8 crew.
i'm up to buy the newly released mac book pro and i'm wondering whether to take the bigger but slower (5400 rpm) or smaller but faster (7200 rpm) harddisk.
is there a loss of performance when using an internal harddrive with 5400 rpm?

what would you modul8 guys recommend. thanks,
    astrid

There is many things that determine HDD performance. RPM is not the most important.
There was the similar question on macosxhints

It's very strange (the link to Forum Mac OS Hints). Every time I bought a PowerBook or MBP, I changed the hard disk to a 7200 rpm and I had a notable speed increase ! 8)

I suppose experience counts. I shall give it a try.

I've been adviced here on this forum to go with the slower 5400 RPM on the MBP and then to get an external 7200 RPM FireWire800 HD. That's what I did and it works perfectly. Just don't forget to bring the external drive, hehe. I'm recommening the rugged drives from LaCie.

You should always have the faster drive when working with video files. Conventional wisdom. AND, if you want, go with a portable external drive, as well. Why skimp on the internal drive?

I would say out of size/cost reasons. When I bought my MBP I would have to settle with a smaller internal drive if I went with 7500 RPM. Since I use my MBP for other things than just VJing I went with a bigger 5400 RPM drive. Anyhow specs might have changed and if you can afford it, yeah why skimp?
