getting out of full screen

Yes - I used the full screen option to get into full screen mode, at which point the menus no longer appear. If I use the CMD-esc key sequence, I do find that the cursor appears but do not appear to be able to see of the pulldown menu options (including the output menu).

I'm assuming you're running M8 just on your PB with no monitor or projector attached. Have you tried running while attached to a second output and, if you're already running a second output, have you made sure that you're not in mirroring mode? (f7)
