    Just got back from doing a night with version 2.

    I only downloaded it this morning and spent this afternoon setting up the midi mapping and creating my compositions.

    I have to say I am very impressed. Version 1 was damn good, this just takes it to the next level - fantastic job guys. I was really impressed with the speed - it seemed to be handling more without any problems than version 1. Absolutely no problems running all night either - solid as a rock.


    I have to say I love the cross fade between layer sets and the bpm tap for this is inspired. The orange dots to indicate when the clip is preloaded is really good as well. Love the particle effects and 3d mapping.

    The action learn function is really great as well, I found it really easy to set this up to be changing multiple parameters on my different layers, and this worked really well.

    There were some other vj's who were at the night who were blown away by what I was able to do with the software.

    You guys deffinately deserve a huge break, but when you can finally face getting back in front of a computer, three suggestions for the next version:

    1) A tap bpm loop synch, so you can tap in the bpm and this will automatically change the clip speed so it starts and stops on the beat - would this be possible with the current modules in version 2? The modules are a really good idea as well guys.

    2) A bigger clip bank. I found that after about an hour the number of clips which the program is able to hold was slightly exhausted and I was having to delete clips and add new ones in from my hard drive. It did manage to do this without affecting the output too much, but having more already at my finger tips would be really nice. I'm no programer so I don't know how this would affect the overall performance.

    3) free-frame support, this combined with the modules would really make anything possible, I'm sure I read somewhere that this was already planned for version 3, if so fantastic.

    I don't want to sound like I'm winging with these suggestions as I think you have really done an outstanding job with this software. I don't expect to see another update for a very long time - you deserve the break. It's really great to see such a user friendly, performance effecient piece of software, with such amazing support, I know you guys read these boards, and involving all the users in the beta program was really great.

    You've all got a pint on me if I ever meet you guys :)

    Nice to hear that everything worked fine!

    Regarding your suggestions:

    1) I'll try to write a module that does that when I have a bit of time. It is pretty easy.

    2) Next version will have the media panel completely revised.

    3) Opening the pixel level of Modul8 is one of the target of the next major release. They are many ways to implement that. The problem with Freeframe is that it does not have been designed to work in the VRam space. The future of real-time imaging is the GPU and the Freeframe architecture is very limited in this regard. For example, AFAIK mixing Freeframe filters with CoreImage filters would require the movie frame to be copied from VRam to Ram and back between each filter. It is a real problem for obtening good performances. We always wanted to support Freeframe but mixing this technology with CoreImage will have a high performance cost (that still have to be evaluated before we can make a final decision about Freeframe integration). Now if we are forced to make a choice, it will be CoreVideo/Image instead of Freeframe.

    cheers for getting back - one of the great things about this software is how receptive you are.

    in order,

    1) fantastic - but take a break first ;)

    2) cool

    3) I've got totally no programming knowledge, so what you just said didn't mean anything to me lol. I'm sure you know what you're doing enough to make the right decision - it would just be really nice to have access to all the filters that everyone is creating. If freeframe isn't the way forward would a modul8 specific filter's module be a possibility, the reception to the modules so far seems to have been really good?

    I am al in favour of not supporting technology as freeframe which is now clearly behind what we need as VJs. When I first tried pixelshox I realized having all processing (or at least most) done on the GPU was the way of the future, and the release of modul8 confirmed that.

    Bye bye freeframe. I don't need it anyway.

    same here, but I've also sort of selected a style that doesn't require filters, so my opinion means even less :P

    The future now is core image i think, Quartz composer files are already working on modul8 :)

    Just tried dragging a Quartz comp in M8, but no boogie.

    you must export your quartz file in quicktime, the .mov file you'll get is usable with modul8 and it's not a movie file, it's a quartz file
