New Codec for VJs

hello all,

the resolume guys have developed a special quicktime codec for vjs.
it decompresses the clips un the gpu !!! and its free.

sounds interesting :-)

here the info

DXV Codec
The DXV video codec allows you to mix more video layers on a higher resolution than any other codec in Resolume 3. How? By doing all the video decompression on the hardware that does it best; the videocard.
More Layers & Higher Resolution
Regular video codecs require the CPU to decompress the frames before they can be pushed to the videocard for display. With our DXV Codec video frames are decompressed by the videocard's GPU which can do this much more efficiently than the CPU.
Not only can you play more layers of video on a higher resolution than conventional codecs. It also requires a lot less CPU power to do it, so the CPU can be used for other things like audio playback and effects while maintaining smooth playback of audio and video.

Would be cool if they implemented the hardware acceleration in modul8 too.

It's more like…

If any users are using both software packages it would be interesting to receive some feedback. Not so much side by side comparisons, but points of view in terms of case studies.

I think in general at this point it is safe to say that Resolume is clearly in the a/v performance realm whereas modul8 is a spacial layout tool that meets a lot of different needs. We can see this in how modul8 finds itself both in areas from outdoor events (building projections) and theater performance.

Its great to see how the various tools out there are defining themselves towards divergent fields.

Actually M8 has always been hardware accelerated...

Me too! That and the fact that the visuals are unlike most other stuff out there. I don't know about Resolume, but IMHO the look and feel of what M8 does with video is much more professional and unique looking than something like Arkaos. A composition in Modul8 is kind of something that builds slowly over time whereas Arkaos seems to be more seizure inducing flash on/off type of visuals.
