    4 screen output

    by djdoty » Sun May 10, 2009 7:01 pm

I play in a band and we are wanting to add video to our live performances. We'd like to have 4 plasma TVs on stage and I'd like to be able to use them all showing the same image or together as one big screen. We would be playing pre-arranged video for each song...no live mixing of video. I am wondering if Modul8 would be good for this and if so, what sort of computer and video cards would be best to make this happen. I have browsed the forum but not found someone who had this setup.

    Short answer is yes.

Long answer is don't get frustrated when you can not find examples of your idea on the internet. This means it is not done very much and your audience will like it. This setup you are talking about has been used for almost 20 years, but it used to be very expensive and tricky to setup. Anybody here that has calibrated a CRT videowall will agree.

Bottom line Mac Pro or G5 and 3 video cards or 2 Mac Book Pros and Matrox TH2G.

If you are not doing any live manipulation and have every detail planed, and the band always plays the song at the exact same timing you could try "Pro Video Player" it is great software but not anywhere near the same flexibility of Modul8.

I'm confused - why do you need 2 MacBook Pros + a TH2Go? Won't that give you 3+1 screens not the 4 screens he's asking about?
But yeah a Mac Pro with 3 Video cards is really the only way to get more than 3 screens at a time. Once you've got the equipment its easy enough.

If you've got the budget for your shows then you can do it easier/cheaper (as you don't need to go buy a MacPro) with Professional A/V LCD/Plasmas as they have video wall capabilities built in them. Hire as required.

How about a Mac Pro with three video cards and two Matrox Dual Heads? That gives you a main monitor output plus four screens. That's probably the most effective way to go and I think it would work as expected.

I recently got a Dual Head 2 Go and I will say that it is awesome. If anyone is interested, here is some video of it in action:

It will give you (3+1)x2=6 possible screens. So a double head will work, but why not buy the triple.

In the States your looking at probably $2,000 to $3,000 a day for the rental of 4 professional "A/V LCD/Plasmas" plus proof of $100,000 worth of insurance.

This project is for a band. Likely there may be a couple Macs floating around.
