If by finding .avi clips you mean finding materials to use in modul8 then it really depends on what kind of material you are looking for. Archive.org hosts mountains of video footage that is in the public domain. Then there are services such as home.vj where you can purchase clips of 'original' material created by other vjs, graphic designers and animators.
As for using the .avi format in general since .avi is not a native format on the Mac it is best to use .mov files (also known as the QuickTime movie format) using a PhotoJPEG encoder for 'full frame' video and PNG with an alpha channel for clips where you may want a foreground element like a logo where there is no background on the clip so you can lay it over whatever footage you are using at that moment.
