problems displaying realtime with mac pro & recording pr

Hi I have this MacPro:
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz

and a;so connected a behringer BCR2000

All clips I use are selfmade photojpeg mov 720x576.

at www.ropski.nl/m8problem.png you can find a screenshot of the most basis setup where problems already start.

The 1st problem:
Video keeps hanging for seconds, to continue later on. The problem solves itself when only working with 1 or 2 layers. But i cannot believe such a hang is normal. (with barely any filters/etc connected to the clips)

Can somebody help me out, please :)

thkx already, Ropski

edit1:
could this problem have anything to do with recording video recording? (i pause after a few seconds to make a collage recording..)

the 2nd problem is about recording
as can be seen in the picture
www.ropski.nl/m8problem.png
there's a red square which is my 8/3 workaround for 2 screens. When rendering logical record also everything outside the red box gets recorded and now i need to adjust recording in AE. Can this be done like 8/3 correct in 1 time ???

Could be you've got something running in the background that is eating up processes?

ok, copied Ilans post from other topic to here :)

my files (video and project) are on my 2nd harddrive
my m8 app and other apps run from 1st harddrive

at this drive my mac runs:
Capacity: 465,76 GB
Model: WDC WD5000AAKS-41YGA1
Revision: 58.01E05
Serial Number: WD-WCAS87887622
Native Command Queuing: Yes
Queue Depth: 32
Removable Media: No
Detachable Drive: No
BSD Name: disk1
Bay Name: "Bay 1"
Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified

and from this one my data (movies) come
Hitachi HDP725050GLA360:

Capacity: 465,76 GB
Model: Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
Revision: GM4OA52A
Serial Number: GEA560RE3T0BEA
Native Command Queuing: Yes
Queue Depth: 32
Removable Media: No
Detachable Drive: No
BSD Name: disk0
Bay Name: "Bay 2"
Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified

i posted here my activity screen:
www.ropski.nl/activity.png

so i cant see anything. edit: this problem stays after mac reboot.
It seems to me there's too much data in my project. some files are over 6 gb... (long time background movies)

But it would be most handy if this would work.

Movie files at 6 gb. That's pretty big. Maybe try with these files to use h.264 compression instead and make sure that 'direct to disk' is selected as the memory settings for the clips in your media set.

What are your memory settings in the preferences?

a view on my settings can be found at www.ropski.nl/preferencesm8.jpg

:)

for the filesize ...

i noticed some clips were playing in ram preload instead of direct to disk... (shame on me) so i corrected this. the direct to disk size varies from 4.7mb to 5.1mb

the rampreload (this is the same as the original filesize?) goes from 90mb to 1gb with some clips have 2.1gb or even 1 with 10.5gb.. :p

is there are maximum filesize / maximum mediaset size ??

edit:
in my group a +b (a only used with fader) vary
filesizes from 60mb tot 250mb with one file over 600 mb

also with all clips on direct to disk the hang in realtime playing is still there. will reboot to see if that helps ...

edit2:
one step closer.....

the problem seems to exist when using 6,7,8,9 or 10 layers 'active' (i used different clips to be sure it wasn't the clip which gives the error)
so for now i will just try to work around with 5 layers...

but it still bothers me :(

edit 3:
my menumeters go from 1 to 40 40% capacity,... easy going.

my activity monitor however says modul8 goes from very low from +- 10% to 140% of CPU usage (@!@#%$^&^!!)
how can this go to 140 while I'm practically doing nothing...
video hangs both at 10% or 140% (i don't see the difference) but maybe this fact gets us closer to a solution.

Generally the ceiling for media is how much memory you have installed.

Try changing your memory settings in the preferences to the following:

- 60
- 60
- 512

I am not sure I understand your situation with rendering the output. You are using only 1 clip in the advanced output?

Yes! only 1 output, clip1.
My record seems to be the size of the total grid (and not my clip1) now it's just adjusting my clip to the total gridsize to have a preview of what i will be rendering. a little bit unhandy but maybe something for an upgrade. at least i found a way to work around that problem :p

1st
new settings have no effect. the hang stays when using multiple video layers actively.

but i discovered that some footage is not 720x576 but 768x576
this could be the problem, so will be going to fix that first.

in my activity monitor (floating cpu window) i can really see that the 8 processors not work together a lot. more common is 3 active or 4 (max 30/40%)or 1 (till 60/70%).

For this problem i ordered snow leopard (sl). cause I'm told by a good salesman in the macstore my processors would work together better in SL. He also said that the processor problem could be a app problem but i just guessed that the m8 folks write such a good software that it couldn't be that.

Since i don't trust the whole situation anymore i will bring my mac back for examination tomorrow. hope to find a reason. I have a wild guess my videocard is f*cked somewhere... because it makes way too much noise.
but the tests will tell. So let's wait for that... (i hate bringing my mac away :(... )

after resizing the files i found out that the bug is still there.
currently using
-60
-60
-512

How many layers are running simultaneously? What happens if you run, say, only two layers? Can you test this out with all of your clips to see what the responsiveness is like?

Also... could you send a report log of your modul8 activity to support at garagecube dot com? I Want to have our engineer look at it.

1,2 layers goes realtime, but over 4 layers simultanious goes bad. because of a kernel panic i decided to put my mac into a thorough check-up and hope to have my mac this or next weekend back.

Then, I'll run both 2.5.8 an later on after installing snow leopard also the new 2.6beta.

i'll send you the logfiles. to what mailadress do i send them? _REMOVED_TO_AVOID_SPAM_ ??

[EDIT]I edited your message, please do not post email adresses in forum posts, it's food for spammers. thanks

so sorry! just forgot about it for a moment.

ok, new situation! :)
-mac pro with new video card
-snow leopard
- the latest beta version of m8

(and the problem is still there...)

where in console can i find specific information about m8? i now only see the main events (database searches / al messages)

edit:
i just saved the complete log and sent it to m8 :)
