Can I use a PCI graphics card?

by minnie mouse » Tue Oct 13, 2009 12:49 am

    Hello,

I'm thinking of switching to Modul8, but the only thing my MacBook doesn't have according to the tech specs is either a PCI express or AGP graphics card. All I can install on my Mac is a regular PCI card. So, will Modul8 still run OK with PCI card, or should I invest in an external drive? If so, any recommendations?

    Thanks, minnie

Your looking at different things here. External storage and video cards are different parts of the system. The answer though is it will work on both Mac's you mentioned (as long as that PCI machine is not a early G4 or a late G3). I have been using my First gen Macbook since it came out a couple hundred shows and still going.

Thanks! I'll install a PCI card into my Macbook then - which is also a 1st generation machine.

Please send me the link to were you can buy a PCI card for a Macbook. I think you are still confused about some terminology. I have seen some external PCI boxes that run SATA and can be used with a MacBook Pro ExpressCard slot. Most results I have seen state that running a Video card is not the best, especially on OSX. It is better suited for burners, hard drives and possibly capture cards.

On a Macbook (not Pro) you can use internal, USB 2.0 or FireWire Drives (I feel I must mention network drives, but don't think about it as a viable option until you have been making good money with Modul8 for a year at least).

Modul8 is an amazing product that will work on a wide variety of OSX compatible Apple Computers. It is also very extensible with a lot of power to do amazing things. Not all computers are capable of keeping up. If you want HD on a Macbook you need short clips with most of the cool effects done in clip creation. If you want 10 layers with Modules on each one they have to be short and 640x480 or smaller.

I may be wrong, but I would not try anything HD on 1st gen. MacBook. I doubt it will even play full HD movie in Quicktime without drop outs.
Macbooks are designed for light use and specially have poor video cards with little VRAM. To have these things at the maximum will make Modul8 so powerful and stable.
And you can not install anything INTO your Macbook(except HDD and RAM). The only option is use external devices and mentioned by VjKg, but PCI box with video cards and eSATA Express card to your mac will cost as much your MB.
But you should try, before upgrading your system what you can run successfully. And be creative about the content instead. Like you can run simple graphics (PNG) files with lots of effects to very high resolutions.
