Hello. I am wondering if there is any program out there that would take the output of a video playback program i.e. quicktime player, dvd player, VLC, and route that into the video in of Modul8?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

The only option as far as I know is using a screen grabber. that means recording the screen. So it's possible but you need enough space on the screen + it takes some cpu power. Don't expect full framerate.
I don't know all of the apps that do this but check out grabberraster

Can you explain why and under what circumstances you would prefer an outside program and not just Modul8?

The reason I seek this functionality is so I can route dvd playback or longer avi files via quicktime player(that are too big to import) as a video-in signal to manipulate. I know it would tax my cpu running another program in the background, but in some cases I cannot bring the hardware necessary to a gig (dazzle analog/digital video encoder and DVD player). Basically, it's just a simple setup option I'm exploring.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad idea. Just bring your stuff. Or use DV cam as a player to have just one device and one cable.
