Just want to play long clips - Best codec for big files?

    by spikepriggen » Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:01 pm

I just want to play one complete video song after another like MTV used to do when they still played videos.

I'm wondering if this is something that Modul8 is even set up for and what people would suggest as a codec for this usage. I basically want to play complete music videos (say 2 to 5 minutes each), and just crossfade them into each other. Most clips I have are currently in .dv form and are pretty large files, say 500 megs to a Gig and a half.

I've been playing around with the demo and sometimes it seems to work pretty smoothly and sometimes the output freezes up or gets jumpy when you're loading/re-loading media.

So I realize I won't be using 99% of the features of Modul8, but I can't figure out any other way to do what I wanna do without buying a hardware mixer, monitor and a couple of dvd players. And I already own a MacBook Pro.

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks- Spike

For a long files H264 seems to work better. You should try some other apps before you buy M8, if you are sure not to use much of it.
CoGe http://coge.lovqc.hu/ is free and pretty powerful. Then AVMixer and BLACKOP CamCam are the ones to look at. Archaos is very good for triggering clips. Resolume with DXV codec may be great too.

Thanks - I'll check those out. I might actually want to do more "visual" veejaying at some point so might still want Modul8 - do you think there would be any problem with doing a simple mixing of big files in Modul8?

    thanks again :)

I've tried almost all of the ones you mentioned and didn't have much luck except for CamCamX - that one seems like exactly what I was looking for, and seems to fuction like it's supposed to.

My only issues with it being that the mix output seems a little low-res compared to Modul8. Is this my imagination? Is anyone out there actually using CamCamx for live VeeJaying?

It seems to only be set-up for podcasting- not for live situations with big monitors or projectors.

If you're deciding to use Modul8 you should use the slideshow module in order to play the videos back to back automatically. Turn on fading and wait movie. Haven't tried it with videos that long but it should do the trick.
