    . quicktime metadata and modul8 ?

    by anomad » Wed Jun 16, 2010 4:28 am

. ok, forgive me is this question is sort of 'out there' - but a question someone asked about my dmx+modul8 video got me thinking,,,

. 1 - is there any way to store frame accurate metadata in a quicktime movie and
. 2 - could a future version of modul8 support responding to something like that?

. here's what i'm thinking - imagine embedding MIDI note or CC data in a quicktime clip that could be changing an effect or control parameter of modul8 or sending that information via OSC/midi out to another system or piece of hardware.

. for example - if you had a video clip following someone walking down a long hallway with lights at a constant interval (like in a hotel or hospital)- it would be awesome to have that clip send MIDI/DMX/OSC information to lights that might fade up and down as the camera passes the lights in the video clip - this could be an especially powerful effect if you were manually slowing down and speeding up the video during a performance!

. or, you could embed DMX RBG light information in a clip that would change the house lights to the mood of the clip - realtime

. or a clip could be sending MIDI notes to a sampler or drum machine that would be playing sounds to the visuals...

. i don't know how you'd put that information in a clip - but tying controls to the video would be pretty awesome...

I remember from the old days that Quicktime is able to play 'midi' - that is I suppose a file consisitng of midi notes that get played via Quicktime. So if that can be combined with another Quicktime compatible movie within the same Quicktime file... well maybe.

One central question however is whether Quicktime is able to read the MIDI information and 'share it' with other applications. In other words are the MIDI notes accessible to Modul8 and other apps? I found this link - it suggests that this should be possible:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21785?viewlocale=en_US

Another crucial issue: If it is possible to create such a combined MIDI/movie Quicktime file - will it be playable in Modul8?

Well I am intrigued. When I get the time I will conduct an experiment...

. re:quicktime playing midi - that was one of my first thoughts as well... it seems like there's the ability for it to understand midi and i'm wondering the same thing your are - can that midi be 'routed' to another app...

. other things i've thought about are using chapter markers to just trigger a sequence of events defined elsewhere or using the audio track (somehow re-routed back into modul8) to trigger events.

. i saw an earlier thread that asked about color recognition in the video clip and think even a few pixels in the corner might be used in a similar fashion - but again, i'm not sure how one would embed the data in the file.. :)

Unfortunately it seems that midi music cannot be played in Modul8. So I guess the chances of getting it working are pretty slim:

Try with this one for instance. Click the player and select 'save as quicktime movie'. It doesn't work in Modul8 :(

OK no need for me to pursue this further. It seems that even if I manage to construct a file that plays in Modul8 we won't have access to the MIDI information. As it says here the MIDI can't be 'routed' in the newer versions of quicktime:

. hmmm. i just tried putting a GM .mid file in quicktime player osX and it didn't like that. it wanted to use quicktime 7 - which did play the midi file

. i'm poking around a midi karaoke files (.kar) - to see if there's anything interesting that might be happening w/that.

. overall, i'd expect the developers @ garagecube to implement something on the modul8 side - but i think it would be possible
