Preview confusion. What resolution? Does it effect output?

When I resize the preview window is snaps to lots of resolutions as you change it.
Other than telling you what resolution the windows is does this affect process resolution?

I'm slightly confused as when you mess with advanced output and setup an output if 1024x768 (XGA) the preview only shows the normal 640x480 preview space (I guess).

Is there a way to get the preview to show 1024x768 in the preview space or is it hard coded?

Attached is a picture of what I mean, the lower slip is the output, pre full screen.

I asked about this few months back. Look at these old treads.
In short you can not and most of the time leave advanced alone. Use normalize instead for non default (640x480) sizes.
And nobody actually explained why it is set up this way.

Yeah I thought as much, just thought I'd finally post something about it.
So the reality is if you're outputting anything other than 640x480 and want 1:1 video you need to use advanced output otherwise it's downscaled and then stretched to what ever output resolution you're running.

Clip (1080) -> Output (640x480) -> Display Output (1080) = suck.

I learnt this the hard way after spending ages making a full 1080 clip and then trying to get the output to look crisp on a 1080 capable Barco. Trying to understand advanced output while side of stage was a nightmare andI'm sure I'm not alone.

Its the more confusing, less covered stuff like this that makes a Modul8 wiki a really good idea.

you're right, it's a bit confusing… but your clip is only virtually downscaled, when you output fullscreen, you get all your pixels back.

This virtual stage gets on my nerves too when you apply normalize in a multi projection setup and you get your media to fit this 640X480 space instead of your 4:1 setup…

Do I see hope in this?
At least lets document this behavior properly.

This is all strange as I recently did a gig and as we were running a Barco that did 1400x1050, so made all content in that resolution but could only get 1:1 output when we used advanced output, otherwise it all looked soft. This makes me wonder if it really is only 'virtually downscaled' in the preview and not elsewhere.

The advanced output should only be used in a multiprojection setup when you need to route your images to multiple output of your mac pro's graphic cards.

Anyway, you must use the display preferences of your computer to setup the right resolution for your output(s) before thinking of opening modul8.
