    Modul8 v2.6.2 Beta

Today we are releasing a beta version of Modul8 v2.6.2. The beta is available for all registered users of Modul8 v2.6.
This minor update provides some additional features and several small fixes.

To download the beta use your serial number to access the yourspace page:

    http://www.modul8.ch/yourspace

Please send all bug reports to support [at] garagecube [dot] com.

Remember that if you want to use your downloaded modules you must copy them to the modules folder of the beta.

    New features:
    - Support for Syphon output in Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). Syphon is a technology that allows you to share video image data between video applications. For more information about Syphon please see the Syphon website (http://syphon.v002.info/).
    - Ability to the zoom the preview window in and out. Use the module system using the keyword direct_preview_zoom and with the new module 'Zoom preview'. A module called 'zoom enable (ui)' is available.

    Fixes:
    - Problem while registering Modul8 if the home directory permissions were changed.
    - A problem with saving project files.
    - Small display problem in the media info when using Flash files.
    - Potential problem when changing the MIDI mapping preferences from 'project' to 'default' while mapping is enabled.
    - Fatal error if a video capture driver takes too long to initialize.

    Fixes (Modules):
    - Description in the Keyword Browser Picking in the module editor.
    - Toggle button and keyUp in the module system.
    - A problem with the keyword 'direct_globalMask_surfaceBlend_Dest' in the module system.
    - Fatal error in some cases when using the Painter module.

    Improvements:
    - CoreImage support for loading external CoreImage filters. This includes custom CoreImage filters as well.
    - DMX support compatibility for some devices like VMS.
    - Preview ratio limits extended from 40/1 to 1/10 in the Advanced Output window.
    - Saves the render settings and the minimized state of the modules window.

    Kind regards,
    Modul8 Team

Does the new beta version overwrite the Version 2.6.1, or can I use both on one machine if something isn't stable enough to use live?

@te-c - yes you can have both installed and as long as one copy is activated, the other will work too.

@Garagecube. EXCITING! Particularly the preview zoom addition. Finally can see weird/advanced resolutions properly in our previews.
One thing, I noticed that ctrl_layer_media's description in the keyword viewer still doesn't mention the extra video input numbers. Not exactly a major but it should be corrected before you release 2.6.2 final.

This one slipped right past me at first:

How is this achieved? Is it by passing the image through a quartz composer file or what?

@The Midi Thief, no QC file. CoreImage filters were always supported, just not external/custom ones. It was a question of just removing whatever was preventing Modul8 from accessing external filters.

Ah, ok. So this has more to do with the filters in the filter module? Anyhow I'm sure this will be clear in the new manual?

    A good place to start...

Exceptional of interest to me is the glitch plug-ins by Vade. If anyone has time to mess around with it will be interested to know if it works.

Oh, Ilan, you are confusing me. Right now I am one of those over excited M8-kids. I wasn't really talking about loading QC-files in the media library with full functionality. That would be exciting but being able to pipe a layer through a QC-filter is awesome.

Because are still talking about QC filters with published inputs and outputs, right? That is what Vade's Glitch plugins are. I've used them a few times in Quartz Composer and VDMX.

There is a nice interview with Vade by Kyle McDonald on GitHub, btw. It was published a few days ago: https://github.com/kylemcdonald/Sharing ... i.markdown

Vade has been accused of domesticating the glitch. I find that accusation very amusing.

@The Midi Thief, I know you were not talking about QC files. What I thought you were asking was "Is Modul8 able to do this because the developers embedded a QC patch to allow Modul8 to access custom CI filters."

I was only informed of this capability yesterday and I am currently dividing my time between monitoring reactions to the beta, doing the usual support and working an installation for the Mapping Festival. All gleefully I assure you. Unfortunately all this glee does not allow me to find out what the capabilities of this new feature.

Maybe you can test this out? Some glitch squirrel image action?

I saw that article, but only breezed through it to notice that he mentioned Madmapper. Need to mefeed it.

Yeah, I hear you. As long as it's documented at the release of the new version I'm happy. Or published here in the forum shortly there after.
Since if you can pipe things through a QC-filter we need to know what to name the input and the outputs in the QC comp or if it follows the same standard as other QC-filters (practical). Or however this magic Core Image thing works.

I'd be happy to try it out after the release. The squirrels can actually glitch themselves pretty soon because of my nutty midi controller.

Not to get too off topic, but what lens were you using in that short clip you sent me?

It's the standard lens of a GoPro HD camera. The angle is decided of what video format you pick. I started using 720p in 50fps which gives a wider angle. I don't really need 50fps or that wide angle so I might try 1080p 25fps in the future. It's just that my One Button setup for starting/stopping the camera is so convenient. I don't want to go into the menu system again.

I might however publish a slowmo of a closeup of a white dirty squirrel belly I caught a few weeks ago. Ok, maybe I should go back to my day job now. End of off topic.

    About the external CoreImage filters,

You can put your external CoreImage filters in :

    Library/Graphics/Image Units
    or
    ~/Library/Graphics/Image Units

There is a post about that here :
    http://www.garagecube.com/forum/viewtop ... ge+filters

    Enjoy,
    Boris.
