    KAOSS Pad

    by mannikin » Tue Oct 18, 2005 3:45 am

    Hi,

    Is anyone using the Kaoss Pad Entrancer along with Modul8? I've been totally thinking of incorporating that into my shows, and use it as an effects box alongside Modul8. I love Modul8 and I think it would be a nice compliment to it. Just wanted to know who is using this combo, and if there are any concerns I should be aware of.

    Thanks;
    John

    In my experience, you should be aware of it's utter lameness ;)

    Hi,

    Wow, tell me why! You got me curious now. I've used the Kaoss pad for audio and it rules. I was hoping the video was the same!

    Thanks;
    john

    Heh Heh Heh :wink:

    Well, the Entrancer is just chock-full of very standard, and "stocky" effects Most of the filters are kind of uninteresting, but you could also argue that's there's no such thing as a bad filter, only bad uses of filters. The timestretcher is kind of cool, and there's few others I wouldn't mind having available to me on a gig especially if they take zero processor load. I'd love to have one to play with in a feedback loop! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

    Oh and MIDI control into M8 while controling effects has potential too!
    :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

    But the unit still seems pretty pricey for the capabilities - so personally i'm not rushing to pick up one new.

    Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I read a buncha reviews and comments on vjcentral, and they were mostly not very supportive of the unit. The price is a bit steep. I think I'll just pick up the Kaoss KP2 and integrate that instead.

    I had a quick encounter with it and one thing I noticed besides the rather dull effects was the poor quality of them.
    Looked very blocky and generally ...um....un-nice.

    I tend to agree that most of the are not very attractive. But there are a couple time effects and a couple distorters that I rather like. In particular the limited sampling and loop playback effect works well with live video.... While I personally can't justify buying one at that price, I certainly wouldn't mind a Korg sponsorship :)

    To pipe video to an Enhancer and then to M8 I guess one would need an RCA to Firewire converter of some kind. Although I suppose going out of M8 to a mixer instead might be just as well... Like Jesper says, its probably a question of using the effects tastefully as they tend to be a bit "stock", which is in miy opinion the same problem with FreeFrame.... anyway...

    OK, camera or converter... (personally I only have one camera and its needed for our set)

    hmmm, got to say that we probably wouldn't want to do a gig without ours now!

    Yes, there are a lot of very crappy effects in there, I'd say of the 100 video effects we use 8 tops. The sampling function is really useful, especially when used with live feeds. A few of the effects work really well in my opinion.

    The real beauty of the unit is the responsiveness and hands on ability to effect the visuals immediately, without any software lag or processor load. we've tried plenty of software (Modul8 is our favourite by far!) and much prefer to be able to put the computers power into making the clips and layers run smoothly instead of adding effects.

    We do get a lot of negative reaction when people first see it and perhaps play with it for 10 minutes, but when its used in anger, and knowing it inside out, gets some really good results, and good feedback from others....
