You can use Modul8 to write text, but it is not able to output directly to a firewire port. However if you plan to output to a tv, you can do it directly in video format.

thanks yves for the very fast aswer 8)

i plan to use the module 8 in a tv show. is the best outputquality s-video? is there any
other hardware available to output the video in dv-quality or higher ? i use a powerbook g4 1,67 Ghz with 2Gig Ram. did you know any breakoutboxes ? is it possible to output separated streams with key and fill signals ? i tested out the demo of module 8 and i really like it, especially with ableton live5 as trigger & control sequencer :D

    Hey Martin

Perhaps you could explain a little about how you use Ableton with Modul8. I'd like to learn something about that...

Hello, DV is not the best quality and is worse of the S-VIDEO output.
The broadcast TV quality is the SDI but an APG 3D SDI video card is very expensive and does not exist for a powerbook.
The best output from a powerbook is the DVI/VGA
You can use an VGA->SDI converter (also very expensive)
The 'multi output' will come with the new version of modul8 (2.5) but only with the new G5 computers.

    Greetings,

I'm not the original poster, but here's what we do anyhow: my band uses four laptops, three running Live and one running M8 (as of now, only one Live box controls the M8 box, but we'll have all three running as controllers by next year...). The Live box that controlls M8 has an M-Audio Ozonic as a MIDI controller/soundcard. In Live, the prefs are set so the Ozonic is the "MIDI in" and "MIDI out". Most of the keys/buttons/knobs/faders on the Ozonic control Live, but a few also control M8 (x-fade, trace, etc). In Live, the songs are played using scenes... for instance, most scenes have three or four audio clips and a MIDI clip. The MIDI clip is routed out of the Ozonic's MIDI Out port and is fed via MIDI cable to an Edirol MIDI-to-USB converter which is plugged into the laptop running M8. Simple really... The super nifty thing is you can program envelope CCs in the Live MIDI clips... for example, I can program a long, smooth x-fade with one MIDI clip. Since the MIDI clips are simply leaving the box running Live, using them doesn't put a performance hit on the Live laptop. Hope that sheds some light...

    Cheers,
    Justin

P.S. Running both Live and M8 on a single box doesn't really work that great, in case you were wondering.

Have anybody tried using the decklink sd card in a g5 with modulo8 ?

    www.decklink.com

Because it gives a nice SDI 10 bit 4:4:4 output - perfect for broadcast

The SD card (sdi only) costs only $295 - it rocks for AE + PS + FCP etc
