Many Performances with MODUL8

Hey all,
I am a beta tester for modul8 and i have to say that the general reception at underground parties in berlin has been nothing short of reall cool. It is really quite often that while mixing with dj's that either the dj's, club goers or management has asked me how the heck i'm making the visuals move to the music like that. Answer is always the same this cool new software called MODUL8. the fact is i am getting asked to do more gigs because thee software allows me to make stuff up on the fly and mix in synch with the music. very cool. and it is always nice to know your work is appreciated in the club by the party goers.

with all that said only 2 small things:
it would really be good to implement a way that people can record their mix sessions. this willmallow them to show excactly what the soft and they can do. very important.

2. I had some issues with longer videeo clips. they played but they really slowed dowmn quite a bit. i know that i am using a g4 power book and that might be the problem but wheen i would clear my layers and then put the suspect video they played in real time. very curious. perhaps i shoujld give modul8 more memory allocation in these cases. please advise

About recording, we are working on it.

Now regarding the slow down problem:

- Do you know what was the format (codec) of the video clip?
- Try to go to the media panel and click "info" to see how the clip was stored (decompressed in memory, compressed in memory, streamed from disc).

The worse thing that can happen regarding performances is an out of physical memory (when you have more pre-loaded media than the size of your memory). How much memory do you have ?

for the recording: why not simply record your mix with an external device, say DVcam?

i prefer going that way all the time, even if the software *does* have a rec function. especially on the Powerbook you may want to save CPU for your performance instead of wasting CPU for disk writes - steeling fps, which isn't good for your recording *and* your performance!

besides, most of the time a disc rec feature does record the video, but not the audio coming from line-in, another problem you can solve by recording with a DVcam. and you got full PAL reslution, too ...

long clips: i could see long clips stuttering sometimes, especially when things are pushed (many layers, effects, ...). maybe that's related to the fact, that only a portion of the clip is loaded into memory and the rest has to be read from disk. that's perfect for short clips, but when you are on edge with your CPU *and* have to read a long clip from disk things may slow down a bit ...

the codec was sorenson 3 video 501 x 282. 208.9 mb each clip was avout aminute long.

i can see tht perhaps it is thee size and in the futrei wiull edit downto smaller clips. to Mudule 8's crredit. it definitely handled these clips onwith all the various effect an all the other layers filled

on last thing. i will definiktely just record my performance good idea. but the recording with in modul8 would be great because whe u come up with something you like it would be good to be able to save it visual to use later on. the fact is u can come up with so many variations u lose cool stuff until you reconstruct it. and i would agree that saVING YOUR PROJECT IS A GOOD IDEA. THE THingwith that tough is that when u open it again if ur media isn't in the same place moduul8 will hang and though u can start your master controls are not avialiable until all the clips are loaded. that's not good.

last think...iT would be sooooooo cool if there could be a way to open an opengl 3d type windo and mainpulate open 3d type animation in a layer..then u shall be unto the gods....

cheers

First of all it is preferable to have your media in photo jpeg format which is faster than sorenson.
We planned to create a recording system for the next version.
