modul8 & ableton live on the same cpu --- anyone trying

    by shittylips » Fri Feb 10, 2006 12:42 pm

hi there, I'm awaiting the arrival of an g4 ibook, and a mactel g5 imac with two gigs of ram, and 2ghz dual core...

so I realise I will have to wait for modul8 to be recompiled to work well with the new mactel duo's ....so here's what I'm wondering; does anyone use ableton live on the same cpu as modul8 for performing ? are there any cpu issues ? i would like to play samples through live, and send midi to modul8 for involving visuals.....I imagine whatever the situation, it will be enhanced when modul8 is compiled for the mactels ....

any input appreciated - as it will determin if i purchase

    thanks

i am using M8 and Live quite a bit these days. works a lot better if you have 2 systems, one dedicated to audio one to video. In my case I am using a 12" g4 PB for Ableton Live, it controls the audio and also sequences via midi to a G5 iMac that is my video system, it's running Modul8.. works pretty sweet...
as far as doing it all on one system i have only been able to get this working by using an external midi controller (in this case a microkontrol) and pluging a real midi cable from the output into the input.. and then messing with routing in Live.. alittle buggy though..
You should be able to use a loopback proggy of some sort, and i have tried, but no success.. would love to hear from someone who got it working that way..
Another note i have a post in the Tips and tricks section (titled Numerology blah blah )descrbing how to use Numerology and M8 together on same machine, that works really well, be sure and check that out also..

Well I chose to use two computers as well. It's the best. I got an iBook G3 running audio and MIDI sequences for modul8 with Live, and an iBook G4 running modul8

MIDI Patchbay works treats. with this, you just have to redirect the MIDI OUTPUT of your controller/interface to the MIDI INPUT of your controller/interface. Works swell, I use it to fake a MIDI through in my setup because my second MIDI interface is just 1x1

    Hi,

Curious how Live is integrated with M8. What sort of info is being sent from M8, and how does it control Live? I would love to find out. I'm also currently using a separate PB for Live to play out sequences when we perform. Thanks for any info.

I think it's the other way round John - Live is controlling M8 via various midi info, lfo's, note on/off etc.
I believe one of the coming M8 new version attractions is midi out, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Looking forward to that.
Also try Numerology to control M8, very interesting combination and I like the way Numerology thinks.
At present I am using Audio Mulch with M8. Mulch has a remarkable control area called the Metasurface which I love,
but, Mulch like M8 doesn't do midi out.. yet .. I control the M8 visuals via midi and set those same controls to alter various parameters within Mulch -
rotate an image faster and get more delay on the audio, all very hands on but good as a performer.
when M8 and Mulch can both do midi in/out that will be amazing.

Thank you. :) Wow, never thought of controlling M8 through software. I'm gonna have to dig into that. Appreciate the great info.

You mind sending me a link to the numerology app? Also, isn't Audio Mulch a PC app? Are you using it on a different machine (PC laptop)?

    Thanks;
    J.

Here is Numerology, there are a couple of good posts around here by refresh (?) I think about that and M8.
    http://www.five12.com/

    and this is Mulch.
    http://www.audiomulch.com/

Yes PC only for Mulch, I run a seperate old laptop for Mulch
and a controller with one of these on the midi out -

1 going to M8 and 1 to Mulch. Works a treat.

Awesome. Found the Refresh post. This is really cool. Finally takes my knowledge (albeit very limited) of M8 to a whole new level. :)
