    More RAM - better performance?

    by Basic » Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:36 pm

    Hey Guys,

The subject really asks the question. Does increasing the ram improve performance? I'll be upgrading for use in programs like AE, Maya etc and wondered if M8 benefited from it? I have 4gb and will be going to 8gb.

    Cheers

EDIT: I now have 8gb on the way... best test when it arrives.

Unfortunately Modul8 is still a 32bit application and can only use 3.3GB of ram. Hopefully that will change soon.
Having 8GB can never hurt though, even for preproduction you'll like having the extra headroom.

On mac, 32bit applications can access 4gb or a bit more of ram not like on windows. Using more ram is good if you need to use other applications while you have modul8 running

I see, I didnt think about the program being 32bit. Thanks for clearing that up and your right 8gb can't hurt :)

    I have 12Gb .... what a waste of money.....

Please make M8 use all the ram

Just to refine this issue slightly more...

8 gigs is perfect because OS X 10.6 and up uses more memory than prior systems. This gives the system 4 gigs to work so that it does not de-prioritize Modul8 when it needs to.

In regards to performances of Modul8 in general, the GPU counts for a lot more. When it comes to playing large files hard drive performance is probably more important than RAM. SSD drives resolve this problem significantly.

That's what we got now until our wizards come up with the next big thing.

So, just to be absolutely clear, Modul8 itself can only address 3.3 GB of RAM? If I need to load clips into memory, how much RAM can Modul8 dedicate to the clips? What I mean is, of the 3.3 GB available, how much does M8 need just to run the process vs. how much can be dedicated to loading clips?

No, Modul8 can access up to 4+Gb of RAM. The space you allow for medias loaded in ram is defined in the preferences.
