    Interactive project

    by utopiko » Tue Feb 14, 2012 4:46 am

    Hello,

I'm starting a project and I need your advice on the workflow ..
To make my question simpler, here is a similar project : https://vimeo.com/26645098

I need your help on how you think they have done it and from that I'll have a clearer idea on how
    to do mine...

    Any thoughts ?

If you are interested, my project is this :

Its an interactive installation. People will arrive in front of a pyramid. Their will be motion graphics projected on it, some kind of abstract fire. Then they will be asked to go to a web address with their phone, and there they will be able to write something on a illustrated log. They will then "throw" their log in the "fire".
Each time a person "throw" (using the accelerometers of the phone) their word/log at the fire, it appears on the structure and more motion graphics "fuel" the "fire". If nobody throw anything, the fire dies slowly..

Thanks again, I know its a bit vague, but I'm trying to find the best way to do this project!

Modul8 will be just a small part of this project - mostly for final video output. I would look into tools like Processing, PureData, QuartzComposer, Isadora to figure the interactive part.

I would look into using touch designer. its PC based but very powerful. Boot camp it :)

But i do recommend having a look. there is a FTE version.

Here is how it was done
    Components
Php program on the website that communicates with the phone
Max Msp patch that receives data over osc most probably
Modul8 that triggers effects and changes over osc from max map
Abelton Live to control music over osc from max map.

    Issues:
    * When more then one people tries to control the installation it causes for the clip to change so "randomly" that people would be left not knowing that they are controlling installation.
    * Modul8 supports only 10 layers.

    Solution:
    * Most probably the it takes control from one user at the same time.
    * Guys are using one layer to project precompiled trigger information for the media bank 1 (done in after effects or motion) This way users know what clips to trigger (elegant solution btw). This allows to use a lot of layers for their installation.

So this is how they have done it, good solution that requires less headache

And yes Touch Designer is awesome but designed by a martian. Evrething that you need btw can be done in so many ways , including (Modul8, VDMX, COGE or Resolume (VJ approach) you just need synth triggering, or done in Max Msp, Isadora, Pure Data, Quartz Composer -Mac or VVVV, Touch Designer - Win (patching approach_

if you need some help email me imoloc@gmail.com, and take a look at mine website www.glitchfairy.com We do a lot of these kind of installations
