Capture built in Screen Sharing

Hey guys

Is there any way Screen Sharing could be used as a source? It would make mixing between two Modul8 licensed computers really simple. Regardless of lag and other stuff, just having a second laptop as an external source using a cat5/6 cable alone and using the built in screen share software in mac would make it a million ties easier than setting up a Matrox capture device, a firewire capture box, a firewire screen capture hack, setting up VLC, or getting a wireless capture... I mean, it seems so plug and play-ish. Also, the Screen sharing app does an awesome job at keeping the quality adaptive... I can play movies sent in 1920x1200 pretty sharp, and artifacting is barely noticeable depending on what it is you are trying to achieve. Once it has a signal running and a steady connection, it runs smooth and lags just as much as a Matrox Mxo2 mini.

Has this been done before? Can it be done with Syphon? Am I crawling up the wrong tree? I could be terribly wrong and be going off on something that can't be done because of passwords and stuff in order to get a screen share signal... But it could make my job so terribly terribly easy.

Thanks, Much love
HaiJak

If you do not want to use the Syphon trick, your only other option would be - Capture the video output from a computer. you will need a video capture device.
Control it through screen sharing if you like, this way you will have good frame rate. you will just be using the screen sharing for control. Remote desktop gives you more options for latency issues.
The team has teased screen shots of Syphon input native, in Modul8. Release date is highly-highly classified information.

I already mentioned I use multiple capture devices and Syphon sources. I just want to capture my screen share using the built in mac screen share app.

Can you send a syphon signal over CAT5/6 from one laptop to another? Still, I think this would limit non-syphon apps, no?

No. I use VGA ---> cat5 converters for distance. But this is useless for what you want. We are all waiting for the Syphon input option as being native. Then you will be able to grab your desktop screen.

I'm also glad about the syphon inputs. I'm sharing ideas of things I discover along the way which I think would greatly enrich modul8's potential versus other platforms.

I still think Modul8 should have a way of natively capturing a screen-share from any computer connected to the main Mac

Right now I have my setup running and screen-share connected over a cat5/6 cable. I'm watching netflix and it runs pretty smooth & well, with only 2-5 frames of lag max... no audio tho, but I'm more interested in video signals than audio. I was thinking about using cam-twist to capture it and send it thru to Modul8. I used the Desktop+ option and noticed Screen-share wasn't available as an app you could capture... This could also be an issue that Syphon could encounter.

I vote for Modul8 having a way of natively harnessing OS-X's own native Screen-share capabilities... Knowledge from this could be extremely useful since the same Screen-share capabilities can probably... most likely eventually, connect the Macs over Thunderbolt, thus making capture boxes & cards, like the MXO2 and such, semi-obsolete. Most cameras and devices won't need an external capture box since they will come with an integrated thunderbolt port of their own.

A Thunderbolt port will allow capture of any DV signals and many others which Modul8 can already handle... But the native Screen-sharing capabilities will still use the same connection methods that cannot be captured. I think there is ridiculous amounts of potential if this issue is addressed... Imagine mixing between laptops and still having the video outputs free... essentially an ENTIRE mixer would fall down to either a cheap Cat5/6 cable or a Thunderblot cable and a single copy of modul8 on at least one laptop...

WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!

Ha-ha-ha!
I think with all this new technology the actual video mixing will be old fashioned and obsolete soon.

I don't think screen sharing is fast enough or enough frames. But on a positive note, Bangnoise from the Syphon team recently shared a photo suggesting that he had Syphon over Ethernet working. If that's the case, that's a good way to get content from a another machine. I haven't heard anybody connecting two Macs over Thunderbolt (except in Target mode) - is that even possible? The idea is interesting however.

We use on premise desktop screen sharing appliance such as RHUB in order to conduct webinars, have desktop screen sharing, web conferences etc. We think it is a better solution as compared to hosted services.
