From the recent blog post, it sounds like they may have changed course on that as a third beta is apparently in the pipeline...

Perhaps I misspoke. I recently got the Modul8 newsletter and it mentioned this. Perhaps what I'm thinking of is that it said to watch the blog for more info...

cause it's new does it mean it's better? also, has anyone been able to build the hap.component using xcode on 10.7 that wants to share it?

Hap is "not better". It is another compromise.

You offload the CPU to give more work to the GPU.
It decreases the PCI bandwidth needed to upload images to the GPU.
You will be able to scrub in the movie

But
You need more disk bandwidth as it uses more space on disk
If you don't need more CPU power for your apps, you will not see any difference.

For example, H264 is suited for some use cases, PhotoJpeg for others.

In my experience with 2.8 alpha and HAP, it does use less processor but you do have to be careful as the processor might not be the bottleneck in your particular system. For me, HAP was noticeably slower than PhotoJPEG. I attribute that to the fact that my video cards are probably already running pretty close to all out and really don't need another task to perform whereas the processor isn't really being taxed all that much. Still, nice to the have the option!

HAP is also using far more disk bandwidth, so this could also be the limiting factor.

David,

Although its not a particularly fast one, I do have an SSD on this machine and my clips (even in HAP) aren't particularly large so I would be surprised If that were the bottleneck. That said, maybe you can tell us a little more about how HAP works. I know that it's supposed to leverage the GPU but is my assumption that if the GPU is already heavily loaded, will HAP add an additional load or is it essentially no cost (I would doubt that) in terms of work for the GPU?

How are you guys comparing GPU vs. CPU task workload?
