    MadMapper with Apple M1, M2, M3 GPUs?

    by timeSensitive__ » Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:45 pm

    Hello all,

I'm relatively new to MadMapper, and am using it for an installation with 2x 1080p projectors mapped to a 3D object. Our content is just rendered video, nothing generative or realtime. The gallery has asked me to spec a computer for the installation. We tested the installation with a Macbook Pro with an M2 chip, and the performance seemed good to my team. However, in looking at the minimum / recommended specs, the MadMapper FAQ recommends a dedicated GPU. I'm familiar with the usefulness of a dedicated GPU generally, but I am curious if there's any reason an M1, M2, or M3 Apple processor should be avoided for use in a MadMapper installation.

The text from the FAQ https://madmapper.com/madmapper/faq is below.

What are the minimum hardware requirements to run MadMapper 5?

You will need a computer with at least 300 MB of disk space and at least 2 GB of RAM and any GPU compatible with OpenGL 3.3.

For further configuration you’ll also need at least a 2-4 cores CPU, and at least 8gb of RAM. SSD drive and a dedicated GPU are highly recommended as well.

What would be an optimal hardware configuration for MadMapper 5?

In order to take full advantage of the advanced features of MadMapper such as (heavy use of) the materials, here’s an example of recommended configuration for Windows : 6-8 cores CPU, Nvidia 1080 up to 20xx GPU. For the Mac version, we recommend iMac, Mac Pro and MacBook Pros over standard MacBooks. Avoid Intel integrated GPUs and mechanical drives.

A recent MacMini would easiely do the job, even the cheapest one. Things in the FAQ are Intel cpu related. Any M1 would do 2x 1080p even with 2 4k movies playing with no problem.

    Hi,
I use M1 Pro MB Pro and It easily handle projects with:
    - Lights (Pars/Bars/Movers almost full 2 universes) - each group of lights gets different material (usually Lines controlled manualy) via NDI Loop (Each group is Quad put next to each other in one Video Output and NDI IN is my main material for lights - This way I can see everything in one screen all the time)
    - Led Strips (circa 20 Uni)
    - Simple video mapping, materials only with 1 projector
    - MadLaser with 1 Laser Projector
    - 3rd party apps (ShowKontrol, Live with simple MIDI to MM)

    Specs looks quite old :P
I would pay more attention for exact version of CPU (Standard, Pro, Max) as there is system limitation for Video outputs.
For example M1 Pro can have only 2 independent external video outputs (+ main display) - everything above would be a clone of one of the screens.
