    Noob DMX moving head questions

    by Hungry_Man » Thu Dec 12, 2024 12:49 pm

    Hi all,

I am planning to use Madmapper as part of an audio-reactive lights and visuals show I am creating for my music. I am using Ableton as my source and I plan to map different parameters from my audio multitracks to control different parameters in madmapper.

Just to get started I am trying to use some video as the source for some moving head lights controlled by madmapper and visualised in Capture SE.

My stage plot (created by a lighting designer) uses 20 x Varilite VL3000 spots (these are old and discontinued). There is no moving head fixture with Madmapper. I cannot find a fixture profile for this light online.

I've looked at another newer light - the Robe Spikie - and am wondering if any of the support files could be loaded into Madmapper or do I have this all wrong and I need to create a fixture profile for madmapper from scratch?

    https://www.robe.cz/support?product=664

If any one has created fixture profiles for any moving head and could share them with me, I would be grateful. I found the Q Wash 250 on another post, I will try this now.

Also wondering if there is a central location where all Madmapper DMX fixture profiles could be downloaded from? The file type is .mmfl which is probably a custom file type?

If I have misunderstood how madmapper works, please set me a straight!

A video tutorial on moving heads with madmapper would be very heplful.

The Varilite VL3000 Spot uses the following channel allocation in Enhanced 16Bit mode. From this you should be able to build your own profile for this unit, the layout is as follows:

    Enhanced 16-Bit
    1. Intensity
    2. Hi-Byte Pan
    3. Lo-Byte Pan
    4. Hi-Byte Tilt
    5. Lo-Byte Tilt
    6. Edge
    7. Zoom
    8. CTO Mixer
    9. Blue Mixer
    10. Amber Mixer
    11. Magenta Mixer
    12. Colour Wheel
    13. Gobo Wheel 1
    14. Hi-Byte Gobo 1 Index/Rot
    15. Lo-Byte Gobo 1 Index/Rot
    16. Gobo Wheel 2
    17. Hi-Byte Gobo 2 Index/Rot
    18. Lo-Byte Gobo 2 Index/Rot
    19. Gobo Wheel 3
    20. Hi-Byte Gobo 3 Index/Rot
    21. Lo-Byte Gobo 3 Index/Rot
    22. Beam Iris
    23. Strobe
    24. Focus Time
    25. Colour Time
    26. Colour Time
    27. Gobo Time
    28. Control

A quick Google search will bring up the full manual. This will give you all the DMX values for wheel positions etc.

    Hi thanks for your response.

I will build a profile if there is not one available.

However I need a way to visualise the output too, and I'm also struggling with this. I can't find any tutorials on how to link to Capture SE.
