Kinetic Lights - how to get started ?

    by sputnik » Sun May 26, 2019 9:44 pm

    Hi,
I was wondering how to start with kinetic lights in general. Saw this example https://madmapper.com/tag/kinetic/ . The only problem is , I'm on Windows so no Quartz composer. What would be the easiest software combination ? Also any preferred affordable winch (LED motors) system and communication protocols to work for example with Madmapper and GarageCube LEDS sfx-01 0.5m which I own. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi,
You don't need macOS or Quartz. MadMapper can send DMX the same way on Windows and macOS. The Quartz patch in this project was used to program very custom control, and useful because MadMapper didn't have Materials, multi-input & cues at this time, but with all those new features you can do many stuffs with just MadMapper. Motors are controlled by one or two DMX channels (8 bits or 16 bits), so you can use a visual to drive the motors and other ones for the LEDs / lights / video etc.
I just helped a user setting up a project with motorized RGB balls.
    Cheers

Thanks for speedy input. Yes, saw those balls on Alibaba- Was wondering if I can switch the balls for Garagecube LEDs- if they are not too heavy !. So basically do I need any other software to drive the motors ,or just MM is fine? Pardon my ignorance ,I'm complete noob in DMX territory. I am just able to connect LEDs at the moment !

No other software. garageCube LEDs are very light, but you have to check the motors specs.
