    Mapping questions

    by R-e-R » Fri Jun 24, 2011 8:05 pm

    Hi there,
im just a newbie to the whole mapping idea.
im wondering if its possible to do smaller mapping projects like a sign with cutout letters in a remote location( away from my visuals booth) where i can set it up, do the mapping and motion graphics stuff and then render out the results to be played on a dvd that loops the media or a usb enabled projector....and basically leave it unattended and not requiring a dedicated computer/operator/feed from the visuals booth.
anyone have much success doing this kind of simpler mapping application and what is the best way to go about it, ie, size and format of render, what can and cant be done to achieve this goal.
ive got these new projectors that can play a movie file from a usb stick, anyone try this, can it really be an effective solution for dispersing little mapping installations around an environment without needing extra computers dedicated etc.
    thanks for any insight, cheers

Your problem is going to be aligning the graphics with the object you are projecting it on to. You will have to set it up exactly the same as you did in your own studio where you created and tested your videomapping.
And that sounds next to impossible if you ask me.

    Ok... I'm going to elaborate a little bit;
You could possibly bring your computer to the final destination of the videomapping, fit your mapping to the object, render it out, get it on the usb stick and plug it into the projector, unplug your computer and it should work. But the chance that you will nudge the projector out of position when inserting the usb stick or detaching your computer from the projector is pretty big. You might be able to eliminate these risks by securing the projector super tight, having a (secured) extension cord between the usb connector on the projector and the usb stick (so that you never touch the projector) and secure (and not remove) the vga/dvi cable.

Securing the projector should be easy enough with a proper mount (look here for ideas http://vjforums.com/archive/index.php/t-27280.html).
But how does one render the madmapper output? Does Madmapper output to Syphon? If so one could use the Syphon recorder.

Modul8 can be recorded with Syphon Recorder but not MadMapper
Could we have a Syphon output in a future release?
It would be very much appreciated :D

there is the beta Syphon Frame grabber....
which you can then patch to the recorder.

But yeah your gonna have to match the geometry of the physical on site placement.

IF you can set it all up on site and patch your computer into the system. Do your mapping and then when your happy record a loop of the outputs. Save that to USB stick (Same pixel res etc>) nd that should work.

@technomorph - yea but this way you bypass MadMapper altogether. So it won't be applicable for all types of projects

Yes it's in the list and will be probably in the next release, same for the syphon input in Modul8.

    Best,
    Boris.
