    Syphon slow down

    by colinyell » Wed Oct 26, 2011 6:33 pm

    Hi,

Im trying to set-up a mapping system where I use a 1920 x 1080 texture into a quartz patch and then use this as texture for madmapper via syphon.

The reason I'm using quartz is that i want to sync two computers together so the videos run in time.

Unfortunately when I pull the syphon into mad mapper the video plays really badly and choppy. Its a real mess.

I have tried playing the video in Coge and syphoning from there. Video plays fine in Coge no slow down at all, as soon as I activate the syphon input to Mad mapper the performance drops massively.

Im using a brand new mac pro with, 2x ATI 5770 graphics cards. Surly this can play one stream of HD video.

Is there a way of improving the performance through syphon?

    Cheers,

    Colin

did you try loading the video directly into MadMapper ?
    Does it jitter ?

Playing a video directly into Quartz Composer editor then Syphoning it directly into MadMapper is not optimal,
as QCeditor works on the main thread.

Can you try playing the video from QCplayer or QCAdvancedPlayer ?
These two apps. (free) use a CVDisplayLink, which is a technique to run a QCpatch from a separate thread,
    which is good for Syphon.

Sorry for being a bit technical.

Thanks for the advice. I have goggled QCAdvancedPlayer and I cant find anything about it or where I can get it.

Where would I find this app?

    Cheers,

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/qcadvancedplaye/

    In QC:
are you using Apple's built in player in Async mode or Vade's v002 MoviePlayer ?

Franz, this could potentially help me in a project I'm working on. Is Vade's v002 MoviePlayer to prefer or not in this situation?

    prefer v002 movie player.
However, you'd better make your own tests to see which one works better in your scenario.

You mention having two graphics cards. If Syphon is taking video across the cards (e.g. you generate the video on one card, then output it on a display connected to the second card) the data has to be copied between the cards, which will definitely slow things down.

Beta 4 of v002 Movie Player has issues with HD+ movies - if you're trying that, use the original beta which is still posted on the site.
