    MadLight Tutorial

    by ziogas » Thu Nov 08, 2012 9:10 am

Please, if it is possible can you make a short, clear tutorial on MadLight? There is too much questions about it.
Maybe someone can answer main one: what kind of light can you control via MadLight? Can you control the light heads like Robin Spot or Clay Paki? Or is there any possibility to plug GrandMa into MadMapper and control both video and lights?

    MadLight sends Artnet signals.
With the proper card (such as Enttec OpenDMX), you can convert Artnet signal to DMX signals, which are used to control lighting equipment.
Think of DMX as the equivalent of MIDI, but for lights.
So any device that is DMX compliant will work with MadMapper.

Controlling moving light (such as clay Paky) is theoretically possible, however, you'll be driving PAN TILT (= movement) with pixel data, which might be awkward in some situations.

A tutorial is coming on that subject.

controlling MAdMapper from a GrandMa was already possible - since version 1.1-, as MadMapper accepts DMX control data as an input

Do you recommend any cards that have multiple DMX universe outputs?

The ENTTEC PRO seems to only have 1 DMX Out, and I can foresee the 512 channels of 1 universe soon being "eaten up" as I get pixel creative.

A 4 universe card would be great

    Any ideas

    Than you!
So thats exactly what I meant: that it can be awkward to control moving light, and really its useful only for fixture lights.
But still I dont really understand how to manage that via MadMapper so waiting for the proper tutorial!
    Thanks guys!

Phil, you can use DMX splitter, any of those will do.

the Enttec DATAGATE MK2 has 8 outputs, but is much more expensive.

Depending on the number of output you "need", you can always get multiple Enttec ODE and plug them all to a router.

    Hi Ziogas,

The DMX splitting still limits me to just 512 Channels....

Franz - thanks for that - will checkout the 8 way ArtNet

(or as you say just but new single way ones as and when I need expansion)

    Thanks guys

Yes, a tutorial on Madlight use is going to be really helpful, mainly on getting the Artnet side of things up and running. Also, a running list of tested and supported Artnet/DMX interfaces would be very helpful.

This is a game changer to be sure. Not that Pixel mapping is a new thing, but this really lowers the entry point and ease of use. Looking forward to seeing what people make with this.

any artnet node should work out of the box.
it has currently been tested on a Enttec ODE (Open DMX).

The Enttec USB DMX Pro will be supported in MadMApper 1.4 final or 1.5 beta (just not yet).

Did this 'detailed tutorial and reference file' ever get released?
