    Burning MadMapper output to a DVD?

    by floorvan » Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:49 pm

    Hi all,

    Spent some time researching this here and online, but don't seem to find the answer. This is a problem that I continue to have and would love to find a solution.

    I work quite a bit with galleries where I present projection mapping projects. Obviously, everything works fine when I have my laptop running MadMapper, but some of these installations require that it runs for a month or longer. I was hoping there is some way to perhaps burn the video-mapped output to a DVD, and play it from there, instead of having to run everything from my laptop.

    Has anyone had any success in doing this?

    I have tried the following method, without success so far :(

    1. run the videomapping project;
    2. screengrab the video on the laptop (ctrl +T from madmapper) also, before doing this, I changed my laptop's resolution to the same resolution as my projector (800 x 600)
    3. burn the output/screengrabbed video to a DVD as a mp4
    4. Play on DVD player....

    Above method did not work. Might anyone have a better suggestion

    Many thanks in advance!

    Thanks muchly for that fast response!

    I downloaded the latest version of Syphon recorder, and tried to find MM in the "source" dropdown, but it doesn't seem to appear? I tried restarting all apps, and in different orders as well, but this seemed to now work either?

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks again!

    Sadly, that seems to be the case :(

    I do have Resolume, but only Avenue, not Arena, so I don't think I have mapping capabilities.

    So my next strategy was to load the media into Isadora, and then Record the stage....I'm crossing my fingers that it will work!

    well, whenever I do this kind of thing, I just make an accurate mask in photoshop - which you could do with screen capture (apple shift 4)
    in mad mapper - then use that in post - usually in after effects, to make the footage.

    MadMapper does have Syphon output. You can enable it in the preferences.

    I concour - you can definitely record your MadMapper output via SyphonRecorder. It works perfectly.

    Could you do a Spacial Scan with MadMapper, take that image that MM created into a compositor tool such as After Effects, then do your scene all in AE, and render that as a single video file for all surfaces??
    I don't know if the skewing of the surfaces would be corrected for though... It my head it works, practice, I don't know.

    @natemac:
    it works very well. tested on this small mapping installation:
    (SpaceScanner->3dsMax rendering -> AfterEffects -> MM again for fine tuning -> Syphon Recorder -> KissNetWork Video player to projector)

    As far as I remember, we used the native projector resolution, which was 1024*768 (cheap projector indeed).
    The signal was sent using a Network Media Server - such as Kiss 1600 or equivalent, can't remember which model we had exactly -
    so there was no need to burn a DVD (who uses DVD anyway, jk), just upload the file.

    OK, thanks, This is very important to me, because I could never get the file recorded with Syphon recorder and played with a media player, would fit with the structure, perhaps by an aspect ratio problem, I do not know ...
