    LED Strips getting really hot

    by lysid9 » Sun Mar 02, 2014 8:35 pm

    Hi,
actually i am building a LED setup with +- 60 meters of LED Strips.

    For testing i connected 3x 5 meters 300 5050 LED on 3 different channels.
It works, but the LED strips are getting realy hot on 100%white - is that usual?
My 150 5050 LED at my wall do not get that hot.

I checked on the 12v (Black) channel with a multimeter and i have +-60 watt / 0,4A per LED Strip.
So, is this normal or do i have to change anything?

    I use the following hardware:

    Power Supply: - hlg-240h-12a

    Decoder: 24ch

DMX Controller: Enttec Open DMX Ethernet

    LEDs - 5M SMD 5050 300 LEDs 12V

    and Madmapper of course..

    Best Regards!

As long as you have a quality power supply, and more importantly it's rated for the correct Volts for your strip, some strips are 5v some are 12v. You should be fine.
Also make sure it's not just a bad strip. But the LEDs will get warm, not hot enough to burn you, but yes they can heat up. That's why you see all these house light LED replacements with these crazy heat-seeks on them. Not tungsten bulb hot, but they can heat up.
Nothing to worry about.... Till you see smoke. Most strips will fry before they get hot enough to burn you.

I've only done that once, when I was switching back and forth between strips and didn't realize I switched from a 12v to 5v strip, It fried just under half the strip before I realized what I had done.... I wondered why the LED were extra bright that day. Oops.
