    WS2801 or WS2811...

    by najrock » Thu Mar 06, 2014 7:11 pm

what is the difference which is best?

I have been researching LED strips on all available avenues ( at least that I can find) and have learned that to get the mapping effects that are cool you need addressable strips... there are a couple different types it seems...

will any ws2801, ws2811 or ws2812 strip work?

is it better to get 60 or 30 leds/meter... I am assuming it is a question of power

what is cheap and what is expensive...

    this seems cheap... http://www.ebay.com/itm/60-LEDs-m-1M-WS ... 0896346789

    but are they crap?

really I am looking for the brightest possible individually addressable RGB LED strip... price is not as much of a concern as brightness... they will need to compete with a healthy amount of extremely bright stage lights ( 100-250 fixtures depending on venue/show... mostly sharpies and auras, some larger washes, sunstrips and magic panels... many strobes and around 17 full color lasers as well)

many of the led strips we have used in the past have become washed out the second I turned on our actual LED wall...

while i know i will not be able to compete with a real wall... there must be a "brightest and best" addressable LED strip...

right now it is really difficult for me to grasp the differences and pick a winner

    thoughts?

    thanks!

    the difference is that
the ws2801 needs Power data and clock connection,
the ws2811 needs power and data connection,
and the ws2812 is the name of Leds with the ws2811 controller build inside!

the ws2801 is the older version of the protocol and they need a clock line wich makes problems with some controllers
the ws2811 is newer and doesn´t need a clock line but it makes the timing more difficult

so both has there pros and cons

the number of leds/meter is your taste!

i have chosen the ws2811 and i´m using a mix of ws2812 and ws2812b leds

It looks like the WS2812 is simply an LED with the WS2811 driver chip built right in(reference), also used in Adafruit's NeoPixel strips. The WS2812B is an upgraded version of the WS2812 LED. This pdf outlines the differences between the two: 4pin opposed to 6, reverse power protection and better overall design that yields higher brightness LEDs, better heat dissipation and better color uniformity.

Before I exhaust myself searching on wholesale sites, does anyone know if there's 12v addressable led strips around that have 4 solder points (ie: 12v G R B)?

I initially followed the tutorial posted on madmapper.com - http://www.madmapper.com/controlling-le ... madmapper/ and picked up the same dimmer, used my enttec usb pro, and similar spool of waterproof black 5050 leds with computer power supply (modded) works great.

but looking into addressable strips now, and seems many are 5v, and don't have the same 4 connection points to use with my current dimmer (+5V, D1, GND) or they have 4 which don't match up with my current strips (5V, CK, SD, GND)

and many of the 12v strips I've come across have (+, C0, D0, -) or (12V, CLK, DAT, GND) also not matching up with my current strips solder points.

figured I'd ask here first, but I'm thinking I'll have to get a 5V dimmer/driver and just use 5v for all my addressable madlight work.. if anyone can confirm or point me in the right direction I'd be grateful :) just having trouble getting a grip on all the options, and what i should be dumping my time into.

i have seen some ws2801 with 12v... but they were too expensive and the reseller was not really helpfull with technical informations and how or why he made it for 12v... so i took the "normal" 5v strips...

Don´t try to use the ws2801, ws2812 or any other digital led strip with an RGB controller!!

Appreciate that & thanks for the heads up, you seem to be guy with all the answers :)

This LED stuff is pretty new to me, but familiar with many other aspects of electronics & diy/building, so it's just frustrating not being able to figure this all out easily on my own :) This forum's been a great resource so far!

all of them can be addressable ,and invidually , ws2801 have data , clock way output,, ,which mean it is fast and stable , but he is non build in ic ,normally one meter only 32leds/m ,ws2811 only data way output ,and bulid in ic , ws2811 can be 30leds 60leds 144leds/m ,Normally at the same leds quantity ,ws2801 is more expensive , by the way , there are some new build in ic led chip come out , i have buy them fromled color, they are APA102,APA104 LED, APA102 is similar as ws2801,Have data ,clock way output , but APA102 can be build in ic , and much cheaper than ws2801 on the same quantity per meter, APA104 is have the same shape and technical function as ws2812b ws2811 ,and can be compatible with ws2801 ,ws2811, but APA104 is cheaper .

ws2812b is not perfect by any means.

but it is readily availible, cheap, bright, tons of options on spacings, tons of form factors. almost all controllers/libraries support it.

at this point I am recommending ws2812b + advatek pixelite 16 controller.

see the 30 leds per meter in action on a stage scale
looks nice and bright right next to a martin mac 101

they come more than 4 times as dense as this (4 ttimes as bright).

so maybe you dont need 12v?

appreciate the link to the advatek pixelite 16, that looks pretty sweet :)

I've definitely got a better understanding of what's out there now.

Currently working on a few meters of ws2812b strips and had pretty good luck with them so far. Like you say, cheap, bright & options to choose.
Ended up with some 1903 IC strips as well for a graphical eq project but haven't had the chance to do much yet.

    cheers
