    SSD Video Playback

    by CaseyJScalf » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:48 pm

Looking for information on SSDs (Solid State Drives) affecting video playback.

I need to get x4 Mac Minis for a projection gig. I am weighing whether I can just get the regular ones with no SSDs to payback some 2k video files over a Matrox Triple Head.

    My main question is:

    1) Will the playback be any slower? Will the time code "lag"?

I do not want some of the machines to come out of sync.

I am using MadMapper and Quartz Composer.

    Thanks!

it really depends on multiple factors:

    - codec type
    - SSD or HDD
    - CPU speed
    - GPU type
    - 1x forward playback or random seek playback

with MM 2.0, the best option for 2k playback at 1x forward speed:
    - SSD drive
    - H264 or HAP codec
    - good GPU
    - descent CPU
