    Photogrammetry 3D object

    by buffy999 » Fri Sep 25, 2020 3:43 pm

I want to map a large odd shaped boulder. I don't have a Canon camera for spacial scanner.
Is it possible to make a 3D object by using photogrammetry?
    Would it work in MM?
Does anyone have experience in this type of project?
Is it too complicated for a beginner?
    TIA

    totally doable,
done it quite a few times.

You'd need to understand a few things about 3d objects tho

    thanks franz
can you guide me to some instructions or a tutorial on 3D objects?

it really depends what software you'll be using ..
    3dsmax, maya, houdini, blender, c4d ...

they all share the same concepts, but the workflow is different.
    I'd start to learn one.

And start practicing with photogrammetry using RealityCapture, PhotoScan or any other app.
Export as .obj and load up the file into madmapper.
We're working on a 3d calibration guide at the moment.

    thanks franz
i've created a 3D model using the Trnio app and imported it into MM as an obj file.
I havent calibrated it or tested it as a projection, but should this work?
Or do I need to first use the 3D modelling software you mentioned?
The only information I can find is the MM 3D calibration video.

once you have an .OBJ file that you can import into MM, and that correspond to a real object you're trying to map, you're good to go.
Plus, in mm v4, we've added triplanar mapping option which allows you to map any object without having UV coordinates.

For a perfect calibration, be sure to AVOID using a short-throw projector lens.
