Surfaces MM vs./ + Layers M8

Couple of questions:

1) Can I have multiple videos in Madmapper without M8 streaming through syphon?

2) How do I link MM surface to a specific layer or video on M8? / Do I have to create a patch work of videos on M8, stream to MM so I have multiple videos on surfaces?

3) Can MM surfaces be triggered? How?

4) In M8 we had motionpath module for moving a video across the screen, can MM surfaces be moved in the same way?

One of the concepts that must be understood about MadMapper is that it is essentially an application for applying textures to physical objects.

In some ways it provides you with insight as to how textures are applied to 3d objects in a 3D modelling application.

Here is an example of a texture of a character from a game:

The way this works in the 3D world is that sections of the image are 'grabbed' for their content and mapped onto the various parts of the model.

The relationship between real time graphics applications such as Modul8 and MadMapper is not that much different.

Make a layout in your applications output, figuring out what parts you will need for your installation, binding MIDI or key commands to what parts of the composition you will want to perform with, and then in MadMapper select the regions for the 'textures', mapping them to the physical surfaces of your installation.

There are several reasons this approach makes sense:

- Bandwidth; by allowing people to load in a lot of media into MM we would have to write a whole engine to deal with memory management. We have Modul8 for doing this.

- As follows above, Modul8 and other VJ apps have all the functionality that MadMapper currently does not. Part of the instant success of MadMapper is that it is task oriented allowing you to get mappings done quickly so you can spend more time being creative.

- Flexibility is key. Create material that you know can work in any context, stuff for columns etc, rectangles, squares, and then you can easily adapt to whatever situation you are provided, with the MadMapper making it easy and fun to map material you are already familiar with, easily and quickly.

In the future of MM there will be the ability to assign a specific media to a specific quad, and perhaps even have multiple Syphon inputs. But until that comes to pass the information should help demystify this process.

Thanks for the info ilan...you answered quite a few questions with that comment! I will definitely be interested in MM as soon as it has the ability for multiple independent elements on different quads.

say you have a cube that you want to map 3 faces of video to...and you want 3(or more) independent videos playing on each face of the cube...for now you will use M8 to achieve this by having 3(or more) layers in m8... scale down each layer to fit in one output window, basically create a video wall/matrix in m8......in MM you then create 3 quads and scale each one to only be on each section of the video wall/matrix for each respective layer in m8... and then you can warp each quad to fit the faces of the cube... and then use m8 to filter or switch files for each face of the cube as desired independently.
...im sure it will get easier as MM develops but for now that is how you can have as many video layers as your computer/modul8 can handle for your MM objects/faces/mappings.
note, ive only been using MM for about 2 hours since i bought it today but have been muckin about with it and that is what ive learned so far

@R-e-R You are correct, only that you do not have to re-size your layers. You can just change the output of Modul8 so that your layers are not scaled down should this be of a concern for you. MadMapper will receive the input at any size.

Take into account that if there are bandwidth issues running 3 video in Modul8 there will be the same bandwidth issues running 3 video in MadMapper when it is provided.

So in VDMX, would I just create a setup with multiple video outputs in one layer? I tried using the advanced output options to get multiple layers to output on the same screen, but MM only 'sees' the "main" output through syphon even though I have VDMX outputting 4 different layers to my second screen/projector.

in VDMX, composite your 4 layers on the canvas, then publish the whole canvas to Syphon.

but the overall concept is the same for VDMX: have your VJ preffered-app output all 4 layers at once, then crop the relevant part in MadMapper and map them to your cube/shape/whatever
