    Addressable LED strip

    by aktion » Wed Sep 25, 2013 2:39 pm

Is there any way to achieve an addressable led effect where via madmapper i am able to light individual leds instead of the whole strip. i other words
if i have a strip of 16 leds ( single color ) how can i make them individually light up and if it cant be done by normal leds ( which i think it cant be ) then how and with what kinda leds can be achieved.

basically something like the ORB project that you guys did those tubes are custom made to achieve that effect how can i manage to do that.

You need LED strips with chip in them to control them individually(or sometimes in groups of three) These strips are usually know as WS2801 WS2811 WS2812B, ect.. their are a lot of LED strips out there that can be individually assigned color. Also you can tell (other then seeing a chip on the strip) your connections If their is just positive and negative, one signal to the entire strip, if you see positive, negative & Data (and possibly Clock on older strips) those strips have individually assigned LEDs.

    hope that helps.

hey Nate thanks for the reply. Yes I do have addressable Led strips which has a Data line to be precise i have the WS2811 chip one but they give ther own little controller with preset stuff on it.. what i want to know is how do i connect it to MadMapper I do have a dimmer entec and the whole set up but i am unfamiliar with how to make the strip consume more then just the one channel.
the strip has 3 wires. green yellow and black my guess us black is negative and between the green and yellow one is data and the other says "GND" I donno may be ground.

but how do i connect it to madmapper and program it to use more than one channel and light up indivudually

These would be your fixtures in MM, each fixture is an LED
    http://youtu.be/TFgg9hBEl_M
Heres a small video I have showing off this with the Arduino, this was actually to show the delay with the UNO but that's fixed with the MEGA. But start adding fixtures and each fixture.

Heres another video of the same using the Entec and DMX decoder http://vimeo.com/58057228#

    Thanks again Nate.
I have researched it and unfortunately the ans is you can control a data scrip straight from mad mapper you need audrino in the middle to relay the data but thanks for the help.

so... if that is true did garageCUBE use arduino to make the madorb??

I found the bars you use...

I am unsure why you do not let people know that it is a readily available product AND cheap... available in cool white, warm white and rgb with all the accessories

because we had some issues and I don't want to "recommend" a product that is not 100% up to my standards.

Well I will say that the site is certainly questionable... I ordered a few pieces for testing... I am assuming your issues were with dead on arrival LEDS and improperly made cable... generally everytime I order anything from china this is the case

I'm a little bit confused. Do I need an arduino microcontroller to adress each LED of a chipped LED strip or do a DMX decoder the job, too?
Which DMX decoder would you recommend? Or if it's an arduino, how many LEDs can i adress with an arduino?
Would be nice if the garage cube crew could give us more details what kind of hardware would work and where to buy.
Think there are enough project of VJs out there but they don't share their setups.

I'm currently using a Enttec USB PRO and outputting to a LT-DMX-2801 decoder Image to control some WS2801 addressable strips.

I've also got a strand of WS2812b connected to a tiny PCB I grabbed off ebay http://www.ebay.ca/itm/321254966298?ssP ... 1497.l2649 which is working well off my Enttec.

I prefer the WS2801 leds though, as the WS2812b are 60led/m so by length they eat up more dmx channels for the same length of strip as WS2801.

I'm waiting on a ARTNET controller with 6 universe outputs to arrive in the mail and I hope to put together a few pictorials or something outlining some of the hardware I've found to work, and any problems I've run into, etc. As you say, there's very little information out there about hardware that's working with madlight

Thank for your reply! Some more questions ...

Let's say I would buy the following components:
    Enttec ODE, http://www.thomann.de/de/enttec_ode_ope ... et_poe.htm
Which one is better with external power supply or power over ethernet?

    24 channel DMX512 decoder, http://www.vozop.com/index.php/led-cont ... oller.html

How many ws2801 LED stripes can I adress?
How can I figure out what power supply I need (Volt, Watt, Ampere)? Is this one ok? http://www.vozop.com/index.php/12v-20a- ... -case.html

Sorry for all the questions but I'm planning the next season and want to go the next step forward.

I understand the ODE devices are easier to link together with a router, than a USB PRO and requiring extra usb ports. Beyond that not too sure as I've only used my USB PRO I had from doing lighting previously.

    te-c wrote:24 channel DMX512 decoder, http://www.vozop.com/index.php/led-cont ... oller.html

As I was told in another thread, don't hookup ws2801 to a RGB dimmer/decoder. ws2801 has +, CI, DI, - for connections (most ws2801 are 5v, and don't have RGB wires like the decoder you linked)
You'll want a decoder with +, CI, DI, - to match up with the soldering points of the ws2801.

    te-c wrote:How many ws2801 LED stripes can I adress?

With a ODE you get 1 DMX universe of "addresses" (512). So say you have 5M of ws2801, and each meter has 32 led 'pixels' - that's a total of 160 pixels.. Being RGB strips, each led 'pixel' takes up 3 channels in the DMX universe, so we multiply that number by 3 bringing the total DMX channels used by 5m up to 480 of the 512 available. The more pixels you need, the more DMX addresses you require, and more ODE or artnet devices to give them the space required.

Personally I just took apart an old computer power supply I had, grouped all the same coloured wires together and made a "lab" style power supply using the red +5v wires and black ground wires. However that one you linked will not work with ws2801 strips as it's a 12v power supply, and ws2801 use 5v power. I plan on purchasing some similar metal cased power supplies, but they will likely be closer to this - http://www.ledlightinghut.com/5v-switch ... upply.html

No problem, I'm somewhat in the same boat.. Spent the past couple years working on projections/mapping and content creation.. the led stuff is a whole new world :)

    Awesome! Now I understand.

Ok 5 meter isn't very much. If I would only need another DMX controller that would ok but another ODE would cost a lot more.

Maybe there is another way. If I would only have adressable LED stripes in one color then I would have more adresses for LEDs and more meter of stripes. Must be 15 meter am I right?

Do you know if there are stripes on the market and what controller i would need?
