    HAP or PHOTO JPEG

    by lamepantallas » Fri Sep 25, 2015 4:48 pm

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering in what situations it is recommended to use PHOTO JPEG 85% clips, versus HAP codec clips.

I mostly use photo jpegs media, with a diversity of aspect ratios, usually for mapping. My files are big when I do so!

    1) When should I use HAP and in what situation would you recommend using the standard PHOTO JPEG at 85% quality?

    2) Furthermore, since I get huge files in photo jpeg for my mappings, 10 minute video mapping, in one clip, size 1.5-2GB. How does it affect my computers and software performance?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
If you are using 10.10 or later, HAP is supported with GPU acceleration in MadMapper 2, in this case, HAP is always better.
If you are using MadMapper 1.X, don't use HAP, it uses QuickTime HAP codec which is CPU only, so you won't gain any performance compared to a PhotoJPEG codec.
    Hope it helps
    Matt

Hello, Taking advantage of this post. I would like to ask

For people like me, we have this configuration with an intel iris 6100.

Are we missing out on the advantages of a GPU?

Do HAP codecs work on our computers?

I say that I tried to activate the check box to use hardware support and many times it does not work properly.

I am referring to the "use Hardware Acceleration If Possible" box found in each video clip.

    Or am I confusing things?

    regards

Hardware acceleration on OSX is using Apple AVFoundation framework. It works for a few formats: H264, ProRes and maybe a few others, and it will work with HAP if you're on OSX 10.10 or later.
