Hey guys,

I'm new to mapping and I'm about to invest in a new projector. There is a jungle out there so I would like to ask for your help and for recommendation. I'm about to start small scale mapping projects such as mapping on toys, boxes etc where I want to learn and make all the small mistakes :)

Is LED to recommend or would you invest in DLP or LCD? What about ANSI, are the small LED with 100-200 ANSI enough to start with? Is resolution such as 1280 x 800 WXGA enough?

All your advice will help me to make better decision and in advance I thank you for your help.

Here is example of what i have in my mind.

If you spend a bit more the Dell m100 is a nice one. An Acer k11 that is no longer in production might be purchasable via ebay or in remaining stocks.

If that was my situation, IMO I would go way under budget with a Pico Projector, and use that time practicing with a low end projector to save up for something that can hold it's own a little better. The Optoma HD230X Full HD 1080p Home Cinema Projector is £670 on Amazon UK. This way your not without anything, but also can spending a little more later on something that could have a useful purpose then just to "play" with.

Should I go for "short throw"?

I also heard LCD is best choice for mapping. What you think?

What is pros and cons with LED projector?

LED sub $10,000 are low light. above $10,000 might be worth looking into LED light source.
i.e. Acer K130 sub $500 LED Projector: 300 Lumens
Acer H5350 about $600 Lamp Projector: 2,000 Lumens

I've been having a ton of success/fun prototyping with the rif6 cube. If you want something extremely portable for small installations, this one is great. Comes in under your budget, is 2" x 2" x "2 and maps well. Since you're starting small, thought I'd recommend this one from personal experience.
