MadMapper & Moving Heads

Officially MadMapper can do basic colors for DMX fixtures.

What is the best way to run a light show with MM and moving heads?

Do most of you run separate software? Some middleware to reinterpret color values as other channels?

Looking to chat about best-of methods for this as trying to mix in 3+ programs gets cumbersome.

On our side we made a module in modul8 to control moving heads and we use mad mapper only with LED stuff or old school dimming lights.

Thanks for the reply. So I was not aware that Modul8 could do that. Custom plugin?

Either way, trying to iron out the workflow for live shows with these.

Could it be possible to make a custom fixture type in MM that translated color values to movements? Maybe with some smoothing so that the movements were not as erratic as the color values?

Hey on my last show i controlled some scanners with madmapper. it was a very basic function i just took some lines and made it fading then i putted the dmx channel for the movements and dimmers on top... so very basic ^^ but it was only 2 scanner and an easy side effect

@sigmasix
can you pls tell us more about your plugin? a small video? this sounds really interesting!

Xaver2k,

So it sounds like you can re-route color values to movements?

I will have to get some simple moving heads and try this out!

I love the Chauvet PAR cans, any suggestions on a simple moving head to interface with?

it is very easy to control moving heads with mad mapper.
make a custom fixture, with the right amount of DMX channels (some moving lights can use up to 20 channels or more),
then set the channels to custom/ slider, this way you can have a precise control of what data you send (without being linked to the underlying pixels data)

Thank you Franz. I look forward to trying it out.

As I am sure you have played around with MM and some moving heads before, can you recommend a basic model to get started with?

I think this may really open up a lot of doors for stage designs. I really appreciate having all of the elements under unified control. Thank you for the tips!

Any Martin MAC will do the job.
The MAC 700 is a very common, cheap model, easy to rent

Hi franz,
I'm very new with madmapper. I want to control Pixel LED and a Moving Head at the same time. How can I re-route the light signal
to a DMX Channel for Pan/ Tilt etc.?

thx for help!

you'd have to create a custom moving head dmx fixture, where PAN -> R, TILT-> G, FOCUS-> B, for instance.
Note that instead of sampling RGB data from a texture, you could set some sliders and animate them with cues.
