854 circles in Madmapper? No problem!

Hi!

I made a "Poor Man´s Led Wall" out of 854 disposable cardboard plates
for a club called "Kastellnatt" during Slottsfjellfestivalen in Tønsberg, Norway.
Every plate was mapped in Madmapper, and I ran the video live from Madmapper
in full HD on 854 circles! No problem at all! I was very surprised to see that :).

But when I tried to feed Madmapper via Modul8, then it l--l-l-l-aggggged.

A nice experience, and I will continue to use plates for mapping. The only "problem"
with them is that they bend in moist temperatures. But seen from front this is no problem.
I actually like that they bend and is not uniform! So there is no problem!

I also mapped the facade of the building. I got 2 x 18.000 ANSI projectors and that was so sweet!
Enough light to really use colors. It was so nice to work with my own illustrative style and use
my typical palette, instead of having to use a lot of white because of the lack of ANSI LUMENS.

I have some videos and pictures from the process on my web-page: www.supervoxel.net

Hi

Love the LED effect...... Keen to do something similar (although on a smaller scale!)

What were the major time consuming factors and what other problems did you encounter that were perhaps unexpected?

Is it just one SYPHON layer you are feeding in as well ?

Any screenshots of the setup would be great to see - especially all those circles !

Best regards

Phil

Hi!

Well, the thing that took most time was getting the wall up and stapling the plates correctly.
For this I used a cross for measurement (since 4 circles is a square, with a cross in the middle)
and placed the plates into the sides of the cross, making sure things were in angle. This took a while.
Maybe a full working day.

Mapping the plates in Madmapper was easy. First I mapped a verticle row of 14 circles. Then I duplicated the 14,
moved them in posistion and corrected only the plates on the wall that was visibly off. Then I duplicated the 28 plates, moved them in
position and corrected the plates that was off. But to make sure I didn´t get lost in the hundreds of plates, I duplicated maximum 40 plates
at a time. This is quicker for Madmapper, and easier to move around.

The biggest danger in mapping 854 plates was forgetting to change textures for duplicated plates. Suddenly I ended up with plates with
same texture, and then it became a real headf*** for me :) It´s easy to mess up!

Here is a picture from Madmapper that shows the set-up.
In the layer menu it says Surface 1386 and so on. That´s not correct. It´s 856 :). Just a "flaw" in Madmapper, where you cant delete a layer
and get the same number for the next layer you make...

I tried to use Syphon from Modul8, but then my machine kneeled.
So I ended up with a playlist of videoes in Madmapper and changed videos during the night.

Will "attempt" my own version v soon, and will drop you through my results

Thanks again for the inspiration
