Merging Masks / Projector Mask Options

    by Janson » Wed Jun 04, 2014 9:54 am

    Hello,

We created a projection mapping with 160 pieces, each piece is a surface (size = projector size) with a mask.

Madmapper slows down the whole system extremely with such a high amount of surfaces, so we need a function to "merge" all masks down to one surface.

Our try to solve the performance problem was to take an output screenshot of the projector and cut out the surfaces with photoshop. Afterwards we used this PNG as output mask in the projector settings.

This mask does not fit perfectly. We need an option to scale and move the mask in the output.

    Any clue? ;)

    mmm...
turn all the quads white, make a snapshot of the output (CMD+ Shift + 3),
in photoshop, select only the white pixels of your snapshot, remove them, and save as PNG.
Then , in MM, under the projector tab, select your projector and load up the mask you've just done.
    It should fit perfectly ...

Yes, thats what we did. It does not fit perfectly, maybe because we use a VGA projector?

The result is a little too big or too small (can't remember). The perfect solution would be a function to create a mask on ONE surface with more than one shape as mask (in our case we need about 160 rectangles). The Problem was that all mask shapes have to be connected.

I've used this technique in the past and it worked perfectly.
I would suggest you do some precise tests to know if it's too big or too small, and why.

I found out the issue with the screenshot mask was a problem with our dual head to go.

Besides that an option for merging mask surfaces would be nice :)

in 1.7 - due soon, but no ETA yet - we have groups, so you'll be able to put all your masks in one group ...
